A MEMORIAL to the American air crews that flew daring daytime bombing missions from Britain over Germany during World War Two, Sally B always cuts a majestic sight when she glides over the seafront.

Sally B is the last airworthy B17 outside of the USA and she has been kept in the air by a small team of volunteers for the last three decades.

She is operated by Elly Sallingboe, whose long-time companion, the late Ted White, brought the bomber to the UK and named it after Elly.

The B17 Preservation organisation keeps her flying, backed by Sally B Supporters Club.

Sally B herself actually came into operation a month after VE Day, in June 1945, and was later converted into a training plane.

She is identical to the bombers used by those young aircrews during the height of war, who are remembered in the film Memphis Belle, in which Sally B was used.

It is thanks to more than 30 years of hard work from volunteers and donations, sponsorship and souvenir sales, that she is still flying.
