THERE are few more distinctive sounds in the world of flying than the ‘wokka-wokka’ of the Chinook.

The display team has personnel from 18 (B) and 27 Squadrons and is based at RAF Odiham in Hampshire.

The display aims to show off the versatility and manoeuvrability of the aircraft.

After the US Army, the RAF operates the world’s largest fleet of Chinooks.

The helicopter is used for troop and load carrying – capable of hauling as many as 55 people or 10 tonnes of freight.

It can take two Land Rovers and underslung load hooks mean that the Chinook can carry a wide range of loads externally.

The aircraft can also carry out search and rescue and casualty evacuation – 24 stretchers can be carried on board.

It is crewed by two pilots and two weapon systems operators.
