THE world's only airworthy Canberra jet comes to Bournemouth Air Festival for the first time this year.

This year is its first full season since 2006 and the example coming to the event, XH134, has been in service since 1959.

The RAF's first jet-powered bomber, the Canberra came into service in 1951. Without weapons, it used speed to escape enemy fighters.

In all, 1,347 examples were built and used by air forces around the globe.

It broke multiple flight record during its first 10 years with the RAF - winning the London to New Zealand Air Race in 1953, setting a world speed record, and it also undertook the first jet flight over the North Pole in 1954.

Unbelievably, the Canberra stayed in active service until 2006; it is thought to be the world's longest-serving bomber.
