Newly installed rubbish bins contain microchips

Council confirms newly installed rubbish bins DO have microchips Council confirms newly installed rubbish bins DO have microchips

THOUSANDS of Dorset residents have been given rubbish bins containing microchips which identify which house they belong to.

They have been installed in the new recycling and rubbish bins delivered to homes in Christchurch and parts of East Dorset in the past two months. They are part of the new Recycle for Dorset scheme being introduced in phases across the country between now and 2015.

They bins contain electronic RFID tags, which the council says will be used to identify missing or stolen bins.

They are same microchip devices caused widespread concern when they were installed in 70,000 wheelie bins delivered across Bournemouth in 2006, when they sparked fears of “pay as you throw” taxes. No such taxes were ever implemented.

Dorset Waste Partnership has said it may introduce technology on bin lorries which links with the chips, enabling collection crews to check a bin has been emptied, but a council spokesman insisted: “The tags cannot and will not be used to 'spy' on what people are putting in their bins.”

He added: “We have been upfront and open about the bins being tagged in our communications with residents, including the user guides households receive with their bins, on our website and when speaking with people at road shows.”

The Echo would like to hear from you. Have you got your new bins in the past two months? Are you aware they contain a microchip? Do you have any concerns about the chips and how they're used?

Not now , But at some point as they lift the bin on the back of the truck it is weighed with the knowledge of which house/flat it came from , meaning we will have quotas and if exceeded a payment/tax will be enforced .

Think it's RFID chips not C?
Clearly charging per load is just around the corner. Lame excuse - missing or stolen bins. Chip removal a cinch. Total rubbish!

From another website, I am not suggesting that anybody should use this information but just showing that this sort of information is freely available.
The last (and most covert) method for destroying a RFID tag is to hit it with a hammer. Just pick up any ordinary hammer and give the chip a few swift hard whacks. This will destroy the chip, and leave no evidence that the tag has been tampered with.

No I wasn't aware they contained a microchip, at no point did anyone tell me this nor did I read it in any of the literature.

Yes I am concerned about what the chips will be used for, for pity's sake don't these local authorities know enough about us as it is without monitoring our c**p.

If someone could let me know how I can remove the chips that would be great. No doubt if I remove it I will be done for vandalism.

Sorry but i cant see how they can know which bin belongs to which household after witnessing them being delivered. Thrown off the back of the lorry in numbers of 6/7 then wheels pushed on and then put on end of driveways in no order at all. Perhaps they might know roughly which road they went to but not the exact house.

Not suprised at all given how sneeky the council are these days.. I was not aware of the micro chipping when launched.. Charging per load is coming, still ill start walking to the dog poo bin and filling with my excessive waste.

Oh F F sake.

It's clearly written in the literature that came with the bins that they were tagged... what do you lot want, the council to spend money to send someone round to read it too you?

If you don't like it take your rubbish to the tip instead.

I know that the bins make great chariots (I absolutely have not put my child in the recycling bin and run up and down the drive, absolutely not...) and as such I assume quite a few will be taken for joy rides on a Sat/Sun night; I for one would like it back without having to pay for a new one if that happened!

My bin goes out at 0630, I take it in at 1730, if bin 'checking' comes in, I dont know who put what in my bin between me putting it out and the bin men coming.
