Danielle Preston jailed for stabbing policewoman at the Dolphin Centre
8:20am Thursday 4th October 2012 in News By Jane Reader
Danielle Preston who stabbed a policewoman in Poole's Dolphin Centre
A 22-year-old woman who stabbed a police officer in the leg in front of horrified shoppers has been jailed for 10 months.
Danielle Preston attacked PC Deborah Day with a kitchen knife in the packed Dolphin shopping centre in Poole on Saturday February 18.
She admitted assault, causing actual bodily harm, when she appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court.
The court was told that PC Day had been called to an unrelated incident at around 1.50pm when she was asked to assist a security officer who was attempting to deal with Preston, who is of no fixed address. As she attempted to do so, she was stabbed in the right knee, causing a 1.5cm wound. The knife was said to have a blade of around eight centimetres.
PC Day was treated at the scene by colleagues before being rushed to Poole Hospital for treatment.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “This was a shocking incident that resulted in an injury to a Dorset Police officer and we are pleased to see that the offender has been convicted.
“The injured officer has made a full recovery and has now returned to work.”
The incident took place in front of shocked members of the public.
A witness to the aftermath, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the Daily Echo: “I saw the female police officer being taken out with her leg bandaged.
“Other policemen had gloves on that were covered in blood.”
He added: “I’m a supporter of the police; this is a stark reminder of the dangers they face. I really think they should have stun guns.”
Clive Chamberlain, chairman of Dorset Police Federation, who represents rank-and-file officers, said: “The attack on the officer demonstrates that policing is inherently dangerous and sometimes that danger arises from totally spontaneous incidents that cannot be predicted.
“Everybody who carries a knife should go to prison and I am glad this person has.
“We need a clear deterrent to persuade other people not to carry or use knives.”

You dont get any longer for stabbing a police officer than any other person but it is a terrible sentence. There should be a minimum sentence for stabbing anyone.

Another classic case of failure of the courts to sentence adequately. This sentence shows nothing but complete contempt for the police by the judiciary. Our local MPs along with the Police Federation should press the CPS to appeal the sentence immediately.
With a loss of 20% of police jobs, no real protection/ deterrent or justice ever to come out of a court room, plus taking control of policing out of the hands of experienced police officers and in to the hands of local politicians...what a recipe for disaster.

Most people have the luxury of sleeping in a safe warm cosy room at night with at least one front door lock. Some people are not so fortunate and end up in very vulnerable situation which they probably did not choose. Though it’s illegal, I am not really surprised that a young vulnerable homeless women who had no safe place to live and sleep might carry a something for protection. I would imagine that the majority of people in her circumstances would feel very unsafe, frightened, uncertain and probably even defensive.

Perhaps if some ideas from other European countries were adopted the criminal and indeed their families might think differently.
.
I remember talking to a prison warden in Spain one time on holiday, and he said that prisons are cared for by their families, ie, they bring in clothing and food, etc, etc, but if the family refuse to do so, the prisoner only gets the mere basics.
.
I think this would make a difference to some.

The term 'murder' means a premeditated killing, so even if it was an attack, it would be nowhere near defined as murder.

No one, even a butcher, has any excuse to have a bladed weapon to hand in public. The fact that she went out in public with this weapon shows premeditation.
Stabbing anyone in virtually any part of the body can be fatal. The femoral artery runs directly behind the knee cap. Should this psychopath have nicked that artery the WPC could have bled out and died in seconds.
Mentally ill or not, the safety of the law abiding general public outweighs that of the mentally ill. She should be banged up and forgotten about, do we have to wait until she's killed an innocent stranger to see how dangerous this potential murder is.

Yes what she did was wrong but she is now taking the right steps to put her life back together, she has the loving support of her family and friends. Negative comments will only hurt the family, and in doing so you are all being malicious and totally uncaring towards the feelings of those that are innocent and are standing by their family. Nothing I have posted is speculation.
Carrying an 8cm blade is illegal, it breaches the legal size of a publicly carried knife and is classed, quite rightly as a deadly weapon.
Carrying such a weapon shows premeditation. It was not a random instrument of death she found at the scene, it was a deadly weapon she carried with the intention of using.
She knowingly and willingly stabbed an officer of the law. That is attempted murder. It was blind luck that the WPC was not more seriously hurt.
Attempted murder is a serious crime, compounded by being against an officer of the law.
10 months is a ridiculously light sentence. Putting every person she comes into contact with after her release in harms way.
I do have sympathy for the family, because if they don't cut their ties with this psychopath it may well be one of them that is left bleeding out, gutted in the street.

Who do you think you are, judging carpet fitters, you don't know them. You've probably hurt their families suggesting they carry large knives around shopping centers. Please stop and think about their families.
Your inane comments aside.
You keep suggesting 'we don't know the truth'.
Exactly who is lying here, the police, the witnesses, the victim?
If you have evidence of perjury I hope you've handed it over to the CPS.

This whole story is fiction. The case has been dealt with, these are false witnesses.. As you can see theres no proof, and a witness would have definatly wanted to share their experieces. Can you not fathom that a newspaper article is a lying piece of ****? Have you EVER watched the bbc news about news corporations?
Asides from that have you ever worked as a journalist? Oh that'd be a big fat NO. Your arguments are all but sarcasm filled, god forbid if you ever become a lawyer, your arguments will be based solely on your opinions with a lump of good old sarcy, not based on the truth in any way whatsoever.
Clearly you need to address your arrogance and ignorance issues before commenting on fictional stories.

resident 88, carpet fitters do not use 8 cm knives and don't carry them around shopping centers.

I'm not saying the police, witnesses or victim are lying, I'm just saying there is more to this story than what you read! Come on everyone knows that journalists 'extend' the truth on stories. Like I said we all know what Danielle did was wrong and she may have also made other mistakes but we also know what she has been through, I wouldn't wish it in my worse enemy. She is now out and taking positive steps to change her life, with help from doctors, friends and family. People can change. Why not give her the chance to prove to society that, in time, she can pick her life up and make something of herself. I know that these negative comments you have put on here has had a nasty effect on her family and I'm just here to simply ask that people stop and leave alone.

I have known Danielle quite a while, has she ever hurt me ? NO. She is not a threat to the public AT ALL . You have NO IDEA what happened. I think i have a good reason telling you what not to comment on you are insulting and commenting on false information about my friend, and i will not stand for that.

The maximum legal blade length in the UK is 7.62cm. Anything over that is classed as an offensive weapon.
A carpet fitter carrying a knife below that length does not show intent as it is a tool of the job.
I don't know where you grew up, but being spat at in the face isn't commonplace to me and I'd certainly remember it a year later. Probably for the rest of my life.

If being spat at is the worst thing that's ever happened to you then you have a very nice life, good for you.
I don't recall saying that I personally had ever had someone spit in my face.
I also don't recall saying that this fictional event was the worst thing that has ever happened to me.
Unlike my comments about your fiend based on court proved and recorded facts, you know nothing about me or my life.
If you want to write fantasy comments please don't quote them as fact.

There are a number of previously published posts missing from this thread - and look at the rubbish that's been left in!
Still, I suppose it does give some idea of what an 'editor' actually does....

You're like speaking to a brick wall.
As for you Dr, clearly by stating what you have, you don't know the facts. Fair enough, i'd comprehend what you're saying if a crime was committed. As for the PC, it probably will affect her but then she deals with actual criminals EVERY day. If she is mentally suffering from her position in the force, the force is equipped to deal with this manner.

What are you, 10 years old?
You clearly need to get a dictionary and look up the words fact and fiction.
My comments are based on court proved facts.
Your comments are just childish bias fiction.
What's your next comment going to be,
'I know you are but what am I'?

Honestly, call me what you please.. I don't really care for someone who i have never met, but i'm just looking out for my friend at the end of the day. I don't like seeing complete rubbish about events that have completely been misinterpreted. I'd understand your comments if this is actually what happened.. I'd be outrageous myself.
I was mortified to see my friend in the paper, i'm not going to lie.. I was quick to judge before i knew what really happened. You can't base a thorough opinion on something that's not the whole story. You never can. You can never state a proper opinion until you're actually there either. I'm not sure why you are persevering with your opinions on this article, i guess the saying goes that people's opinions will never change if they are not willing to be changed.

The facts are that a mentally unstable woman stabbed a police officer in the leg with a deadly weapon. An attack that could of potentially killed the officer.
You tell me if that's not true?
If you have evidence that it's not true why did you not present it in court?
So I'll ask you again.
Instead of repeating your own feelings about this rather than any facts. Can you please present any facts that contradict the courts version of events.
Simply verbally stamping your feet and shouting 'it's not fair, she's my mate' unfortunately isn't a reasonable argument. Neither is it a defense of a psychopathic potential murderer. Neither is it a reason for this ridiculously lenient sentence.

This newspaper article is unfortunatly not a court report, i don't know if you knew that.
These are 'reported by a slanderous newspaper fact'.

I'll ask you for the umpteenth time, did she, or did she not stab an officer of the law with a deadly weapon. Which bit of this is not factually correct?
May I also suggest, yet again that you buy a dictionary.
If I were being sanctimonious I would be suggesting that I am of a higher moral standing than you.
I don't believe this discussion has focused on morals.
It has more been about your lack of understand of what is a fact and what are personal feelings.
The courts and I deal in facts and the law, which you would like disregarded and replaced with your own personal feelings.
If only Abu Hamza had been aware of the, 'it's not fair, you don't know me, I've had a hard life' defense. Which according to you circumvents any law of the United Kingdom.
