Event will highlight success of Bournemouth's night-time economy

BOURNEMOUTH will use the opening night of the forthcoming Arts by the Sea Festival to showcase the success of the local night-time economy.

As one of 31 towns and cities to have Purple Flag accreditation, Bournemouth plans to host an exciting show at the Lansdowne next Saturday to mark Purple Flag Week.

The initiative is part of the Purple Flag accreditation scheme, a town and city centre award that aims to highlight the contribution made by the night-time economy and challenge the common negative perceptions about the safety of town centres during the evening.

The event is expected to start at 9pm and it will last for approximately an hour and a half.

Jon Shipp, Bournemouth’s night time economy co-ordinator, said: “We were proud to have been awarded the Purple Flag in 2010.

“This is now a great opportunity to provide awareness of our award to our residents and visitors. And with students at the core of the event, to the student population.”

Successful just means "money-making". It doesn't stop Bournemouth having quite a threatening atmosphere in the late evening, it doesn't stop noise nuisance and it doesn't stop there being extremely limited appeal for those who are outside the 18-30 range who would still like to go out to drink or eat. The council's attitude is that as long as money is changing hands then anything goes.

Adrian XX has hit the nail on the head. I stopped coming into Bournemouth on a night time due to drunken thuggish behaviour which means I take my ££'s to places that value ALL visitors and not just those that power drink, fight & run in front of moving vehicles.
So how good is the Purple Flag Scheme when you have to pay ATCM to obtain it??

Thanks for the info delta3. I see that purple flag is basically a brainchild of the drinks industry having Diageo (which produces most of the products you are likely to drink on a night out) as its main commercial sponsor.

So all we can expect from purple flag is longer opening hours and greater consumption.

I am sick and tired of the so called movers and shakers of Bmth coming out with this sort of rubbish, flags etc, any person of any senses knows that unless you want to be part of drunken brigade you stay away from old christchurch rd westover rd the square and the triangle, those people may be having fun but it is at the expense of the majority who now feel these areas are out of bounds, some of the outright disgusting behaviour that goes on in bmth town centre at night would turn the heads of most open minded people, i feel sorry for the police who do their best in having to deal with the rubbish on our streets

Great post delta3. Man, I love the fee structure and what do they mean, really, by 'light touch fee to maintain status.' Fee for banking the cheque presumably.

Awarded is bit stretched here, now if he called it a 'paid-for award scheme' the truth of this award's value is visible.

Once again more of an advertising / PR piece rather than true reporting. I find it disgraceful that the Echo does not give us the full background to this story. Thankfully we have intelligent readers who take the time to investigate and bring the full facts to our attention by means of this site.

According to the Purple Flag website:-

"Areas that reach or surpass Purple Flag standards can fly the flag! Benefits include:

•A raised profile and an improved public image
•Increased visitors
•Increased expenditure
•Lower crime and anti-social behaviour
•A more successful mixed-use economy"

So where is this "successful mixed-use economy" then? They are obviously using a very loose definition for "mixed"!
