Event will highlight success of Bournemouth's night-time economy
1:30pm Monday 24th September 2012 in News
BOURNEMOUTH will use the opening night of the forthcoming Arts by the Sea Festival to showcase the success of the local night-time economy.
As one of 31 towns and cities to have Purple Flag accreditation, Bournemouth plans to host an exciting show at the Lansdowne next Saturday to mark Purple Flag Week.
The initiative is part of the Purple Flag accreditation scheme, a town and city centre award that aims to highlight the contribution made by the night-time economy and challenge the common negative perceptions about the safety of town centres during the evening.
The event is expected to start at 9pm and it will last for approximately an hour and a half.
Jon Shipp, Bournemouth’s night time economy co-ordinator, said: “We were proud to have been awarded the Purple Flag in 2010.
“This is now a great opportunity to provide awareness of our award to our residents and visitors. And with students at the core of the event, to the student population.”

Successful just means "money-making". It doesn't stop Bournemouth having quite a threatening atmosphere in the late evening, it doesn't stop noise nuisance and it doesn't stop there being extremely limited appeal for those who are outside the 18-30 range who would still like to go out to drink or eat. The council's attitude is that as long as money is changing hands then anything goes.
So how good is the Purple Flag Scheme when you have to pay ATCM to obtain it??

And for all those watching their budgets this is what having a purple flag costs

So all we can expect from purple flag is longer opening hours and greater consumption.

Awarded is bit stretched here, now if he called it a 'paid-for award scheme' the truth of this award's value is visible.

"Areas that reach or surpass Purple Flag standards can fly the flag! Benefits include:
•A raised profile and an improved public image
•Increased visitors
•Increased expenditure
•Lower crime and anti-social behaviour
•A more successful mixed-use economy"
So where is this "successful mixed-use economy" then? They are obviously using a very loose definition for "mixed"!
