Mum's anger at road report finding after speeding fears dismissed

A POOLE mum who led a campaign for traffic calming has been left disappointed and frustrated by a council report which found speeding was not an issue on her street.

Hannah Lammiman gathered more than 50 signatures on a petition calling for action on Salterns Road, Lower Parkstone after her family cat Frank was mown down.

Operation Frank as it was known gained the support of her neighbours this summer – who told the Echo cars often reached speeds 40 or 50mph and spoke of their fears for children heading to Baden Powell school. Their suggestions including speed bumps or temporary speed cameras.

The concerns prompted the council to monitor traffic on the one-way street, but its subsequent report found that, over a two week period of 24 hour monitoring, the average speed was 26mph. It concludes: “It is not possible to justify funding any traffic calming measures in Salterns Road at present.”

The only action it recommends is forwarding the residents’ concerns to police and Dorset Road Safe, and some minor maintenance work to signage and road markings.

Hannah told the Echo she felt the vehicle monitoring boxes had been installed in the wrong place. They were close to the junction with Tennyson Road where she says traffic naturally slows – rather than the north end near the junction with Commercial Road where she maintains speeding is a problem.

“It really is horrendous the speed they come into the road,” she added.

“I’m really disappointed by this report. But I won’t give up.”

The report will come before Borough of Poole’s transport advisory group on Thursday, December 20. Hannah told the Echo she will attend and ask for the monitoring boxes to be reinstalled in a different position.

Maybe Hannah should have submitted her petition around Feb-Mar time as the councils are usually falling over themselves to spend surplus money on the roads as they approach the end of the financial year?

There may well be an issue with speed on this road but the council have failed to gather evidence of it, I'm sure they are not going to spend thousands on traffic calming because a cat was run over.

Don't think there is a minimum speed for cat survival like the advert for kids at 40 vs 30 mph.

Under the wheel = flat cat.

Sorry to hear about the cat. all it would take if Dorset Police put a copper at random times with a speed gun or even the camera partnership with a van. But I guess as it wouldn't make any money from fines they won't do it!!

When I first saw the photo and headline, I thought it was going to be about her son getting knocked over. Not a cat.

I would love to know how they know cars are doing 40mph/50mph. I'm guessing they are having a guess and adding a bit extra to make it sound worse. I often drive down that road, and have never seen cars looking like they are speeding.

they need to get rid of traffic calming in the form of ramps! Twice in the last week ive been overtaken on them as i have to take them slow (which i thought was the reason for them) as my car is old and quite low. Also the ramps near coy pond managed to push my exhaust against the underside of my car causing a burning of the paint!
They really need to lose the ramps and come up with a better idea.

try blowing you tyres up it will enable your old fashioned car to miss the new fashioned ramps
also you are liable if your old car damages the ramps
keep it quiet dont broadcast it

How silly, how could i be liable when my car was round long before the ramps were?
Tyres are "blown up" as you put it every week along with oil, coolent, screenwash, brake and clutch fluid etc etc so i dont think its that.
Maybe you have one of them lovely (but pointless) chelsea tractors and clear these obsitcals with ease?

Oh and its not old fashioned its classic.
