Smoke? Join Dorset's mass quit event
4:00pm Wednesday 12th September 2012 in News
SMOKERS in Dorset are encouraged to take part in the first-ever national mass quit attempt next month.
You can find out more at the Sovereign Centre in Boscombe on September 19.
It aims to make giving up easier in chunks of 28 days.
Evidence shows that smokers who quit for 28 days are five times more likely to stay stopped.
Quitters can receive a preparation pack, 28-day Quit Calendar and Health and Wealth Wheel.
They will be supported and encouraged through a daily messaging service, inspiration from celebrities, a Stoptober app, motivational texts and Facebook.
Information is available at pharmacies, surgeries, on smokefree.nhs.uk/Stop tober and on the websites for NHS Bournemouth and Poole and NHS Dorset.

I enjoy a cigarette, I like the flavour, the smell of the smoke, the satisfaction it gives me and I don't find it disgusting in any way. The amount of taxation I pay on each pouch of tobacco helps pay for the NHS, to pay off the government's debts and it keeps people in employment making, distributing and retailing it.

I am fed up with people telling me I should quit, if I ever do need to use the NHS because of my smoking I will have paid much more into the budget than I will ever take out of it. It is my choice, I work hard and have worked from leaving school, I have never claimed any benefits and if I want to enjoy a cigarette I should be able to without feeling guilty.

There needs to be a place (like a lavatory) for smoking, fitted with a large chimney, where these addicts can go and enjoy their habit without upsetting and hazarding the majority of the population. Then perhaps we, the majority, can enjoy fresh air and not have our pavements littered with fag ends and packets which some smokers consider normal to throw down.
