All American bike trek for Dorset's Alan

RIDER: Alan Young RIDER: Alan Young

A KIND-hearted Poole man has completed a bike ride across America for charity.

Truck driver Alan Young, 46, went the distance over the space of three months to fundraise for DentAid, which aims to improve oral health in developing countries.

He completed the ride, which saw him pedal 4,064 miles, with two other people, Andy Whittle from Shropshire and Miles Goff from Cambridgeshire, whom he met on an online cycling forum.

He said: “It was brilliant. We did 68 days of riding, which resulted in 75 days in total, including the rest days.”

He added: “It was my first time in America, so everything was new to me and we did find that the drivers are very courteous.”

The group had not planned where they were going to stay, but were fortunate to find space in churches, libraries, town parks and motels along the route.

Alan said: “We had two days of rain over the 75 days and the rest of the time it was 80-90 degrees, so we just had to battle head winds. He added: “I would definitely do something like this again.”

Wouldn't raising money for UK dentistry be more useful?

Glad to know they sponged off churches, town libraries and parks.

Just how much did they raise? I have my doubts.
