Bumper crowds roll in for the Great Dorset Steam Fair

UP to 60,000 people were expected through the gates at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this weekend.

Despite the wet weather earlier in the week, the sunny skies helped to dry the last of the soggy fairground with live music and other events entertaining the crowds through the day and into the night.

Adam’s Axemen were demonstrating the skills of the forester and lumberjack in the countryside arena over the weekend while the sheep show included a live shearing demonstration.

Cyril the Squirrel and his racing terriers kept youngsters entertained with the Gamegoer Gun Dogs showed dogs, hawk and ferrets in their show.

Other attractions included the Heavy Haulage Arena, Stunt Area and military and commercial vehicles as well as vintage tractors.

A stone plinth in memory of Michael Oliver, the founder of the Steam Fair who died in 2009, has been placed overlooking the whole of the showground.

The folk marquee was also named after him this year.
