Hedgehog crusader in Poole saves orphaned duo

GETTING BETTER: The baby hedgehogs GETTING BETTER: The baby hedgehogs

THESE tiny baby hedgehogs were orphaned after a horrifying accident crushed their mother and left a sibling with agonising fatal injuries.

The surviving pair, who are only a few days old, have been taken in by Poole’s CRASH Hedgehog Hospital, where founder Angela Squires is giving them round-the-clock feeds. She said the family was hurt when a couple decided to move their garden shed.

“Instead of dismantling it where they could see and check underneath for nesting hedgehogs, they just moved it complete,” she explained.

“The whole shed was pulled along and inevitably dropped on the nursing mother and the hoglets below. Mum was squashed and died and the three babies were injured and traumatised.

“The smallest had internal injuries and was screaming constantly. He died that night. The other two have bruising, but I managed to get some milk into them and hopefully they should pull through.”

Angela, who devotes her life to rescuing hedgehogs, pleaded with people not to disturb sheds in the spring and summer, which is when the hoglets are born. “I can’t get the thought out of my mind of the poor mum getting slowly crushed as she got dragged along,” she said.

She has also been campaigning for gardeners to stop using slug pellets containing metaldehyde because of the number of hedgehogs that have been dying after eating poisoned slugs or snails.

Before you start getting on your soapbox about hedgehogs, dogs, in fact anything bar people - remember before I said "freedom of choice" so maybe just let her do her job, and she does it voluntarily.

Well done Angela - there are some decent folk locally who support you.

Is there really any need for comments like that? This lady is not doing you any harm or costing you any money so why do you need to be like this. And if so few people care about things like this then 1. the echo wouldn't bother publishing the stories and 2. charities like the RSPCA etc would get nowhere near as many donations. So hate to break it to you but there really are a lot of people out there who give a **** about animals.

I care.... and raised my children to respect everything and anybody in all situations as best as they could.
The other night my older son took my autistic teenager son to the shop as it was getting dark.My older son saw a hedgehog about to cross the road and stopped the oncoming traffic,to let the little hog go on his way safely. The cars were quite happy when they realised what the reason was and why they were stopped.
My teenage son now believes his older brother to be his biggest hero in the world

Very useful animals are hedgehogs. Gardeners need to encourage them. Much better than using chemicals to control pests.

Ahem ....I think as you've seen by reading the above comments there are plenty of people who do care about others (both animals and humans) and dont live their life behind whinging.

It doesn't really matter that you dont - with your attitude its probably better you have no association with any caring establishments.

You are but a strange being ....I just wonder if you do anything else bar get kicks out of being and letting the locality know how miserable you are...

Ho hum - time to move on and enjoy life (shame you dont).

Keep up the good work Angela and all other animal rescues !

I work for a caring establishment but I don't care much about animals. It is perfectly possible to care about humans and not care about animal suffering.

However, I do find hedgehogs cute and attractive beasts and I care far more about the survival of the species in the UK (they are much rarer than they used to be) than I care about the suffering of a couple of individuals. As someone else pointed out, they are very useful in the garden.

One problem that may be affecting their survival - at least in urban Dorset - is the high number of foxes. Perhaps we could consider reducing fox numbers to allow more hedgehogs to survive? Urban foxes are, in a way, an introduced species since they would not be in town if we did not waste so much food as there would be nothing for them to eat.

You can also roll then around the garden like a bowling ball to pick up dead leaves, saving money on a rake.

Pete,
I have to tell you that you struck out on this one.
You can "bag" all the politicians you like but when you attack hedgehogs it is like attacking the flag, Royalty, and the British way of life!
You keep on about your age, health etc. but if you dont want us to keep praying for your continued existence, LEAVE THE HEDGEHOGS ALONE!

Wifelife rehabilitation doesnt cost nothing, and this lady has more than just test two hedgehogs to look after, she get inundated with them. I have looked after hedgehogs in the past and the food doesnt come cheap, nor do things like the equipment needed to look after such young animals.

funkychicken_83 says...

How dare you call me dumb just because I actually have an idea what it cost to do the sort of work that is being carried out by this charity. have you actually ever looked as the cost of hedgehog food, medications etc? If you dont want to give money for this sort of thing then no one is forcing you to, but there is no need for you to have a go at anyone that does.

Bad mouthing and insults ?.you obviously have got problems,do you know what bad mouthing is ,of course you dont, and by having a go at my comments,it makes me feel i have hit a sore point, and must be, perhaps, getting nearer the truth.Would you like to tell us all how many hedgehogs are kept, and how much food, etc is costing. ?.

funkychicken_83 says...
9:25pm Sat 1 Sep 12

You do nothing up have a go at people on here and I'm the one with a problem?! And calling someone dumb isn't insulting them? As I have already said, I know what it costs as I have actually rehabilitated a hedgehog so no I don't need you to tell me anything.

pete woodley says...
9:53pm Sat 1 Sep 12

So you cant answer my other questions, and you reckon you know every thing about hedgehogs,so i will ask how much does it cost to keep a hedgehog for a week ?.

funkychicken_83 says...
10:06pm Sat 1 Sep 12

Exactly what question am I supposed to have not answered? And when did I say I know everything about hedgehogs, just that I have looked after them. Re the cost of hedgehog food, a kilo of dry food is about a fiver, trays of wet food were about 70p each. A tray would last one hedgehog about 2 days and the dry about a month. Multiply that for more hedgehogs and the bill would soon mount up, and thats not taking into account things like milk replacement for the really young ones, or any vets bills, fuel costs for collecting animals, bedding materials... its not just the food that cost money. But then again you probably already know this seeing as you are such an expert on this charity.

pete woodley says...
10:19pm Sat 1 Sep 12

You did not say how many were being kept,so i am correct in saying that you did not answer the question.,and you have not said how much a week is total cost.

Well maybe you, being the world expert on everything as you seem to think you are, could answer this question for us. Or maybe, and more likely, you won't be able to as you don't really have a clue, just like many things you like to aimlessley rant about on here. You're such a dumb moron. And it's funny you have the nerve to call me a coward. I hope the irony isn't lost on you seeing as that all you do on here is put others down. It's easy to do it behind a computer screen isn't it big man?. Don't you like getting a taste of your own medicine?

And seeing as you like to think that you're such an expert on this charity, why don't you answer your own questions? You can't can you? Because you actually don't know anything about it.

So rather then spending your pointless existence trying to put down does who are actually trying to do something good with their lives, go and do something worthwhile with your life you ignorant twit.

You make me laugh old man. I haven't even pretended I know anything about this charity. You're the one who's pretending you do. And I'm also not sure why I have shown I don't know much about anything. Please enlighten me oh (likes to think he's) wise one.

And you do a very good job of showing the sort of person you are on this site with the bitchy comments that you regularly post for no real reason other then to cause offence.

But hey, you've given me a good laugh. You clearly can't hack it when someone stands up to the bile you write and it's been quite amusing. I think for your own sake, you need to find a nice retirement home gramps. Someone to look after you as the ittational hate grows.
