Plans for a new Tesco in Kinson have stalled after the Civic Society start further talks

THE latest plans for a Tesco at Kinson should be put on hold for further talks, a group says.

Bournemouth Civic Society says the plans for the shopping parade near the Royal Oak pub would provide ‘considerable benefit’ for Kinson’s shopping centre. But in comments to Bournemouth council, the society said it did not approve of the ‘asymmetrical treatment of the front display windows of the new shop units that will be built either side of the existing 19th century shop’. They added: “We think a more sensitive treatment of this architectural feature is necessary.”

Tesco and its developer want to demolish the parade and build anew. An earlier application was initially approved, but the companies could not reach a deal on making a £200,000 payment to the council to mitigate the increase in traffic and road damage.

Permission was refused in April when the deadline expired. One tenant in the parade, greengrocer Malcolm Townsend, has a lease until November, 2013 and has so far rejected a buyout.

Do the residents of Kinson really care what the Bournemouth Civic Society think ???
What they want is a supermarket which is convenient to them and where they shop. Just like the rest of us.
Anything has to be preferable to that horrible mess that is there now

My sentiments exactly. This whole affair has been dragging on for far too long. All that has been achieved so far is to kill off most of the existing trade in Kinson and make the shopping parade look like something from an inner city sink estate. Whilst I believe in independent shops, we have been left without those or a decent supermarket. It's a bit late to be worrying about the historical interest of the village, most of this was demolished in the 1950's !

I admire his stance. The terms of his lease must be advantageous for him to keep going.

The Bournemouth Civic Society is a conglomerate of interfering **** who love causing trouble.
Kinson residents are fed up with the slum shopping parade which has deteriorated over the years and needs knocking down, at least Tesco has the cash to build something a lot better and the people want Tesco.
Stuff the civic society and listen the the residents for a change.
Malcolm Townsend will end up with nothing when his lease runs out so he should get out now and make a few quid.

No, that doesn't fit in with the plans for the New World Order where, in 20 years time, you will only be able to shop at Tesco when 'every little help' will cost you megabucks.

Just back from Turkey where Tesco is called 'Kipa', and Asia where it is branded as 'Lotus'.

no its called business and to be honest dont people prefer fresh food rather than the overstocked stale offerings from the premier chain franchised to foreigners which simply are not trustworthy. people who live in that area need what tesco are offering and the sooner the better

I never get this - yes they're biggest in the UK but worldwide they're behind US company Walmart (Known as Asda here), French company Carrefour and German company AG Metro. They're a successful British company competing on the world stage - why the hatred? The reason why they feel so big here is because they entered the conveinience store market in such a big way - and massively drove down prices in those stores compared to the likes of Spar etc. Personally I prefer Sainsburys, but none of the chains in the UK are so big they don't have to compete, which must be a good thing.

As a resident, please could approval be given to provide a much needed s/market & to tidy up this awful area.
Come on Bournemouth Councillors do the right thing for residents.

It makes no difference whether it is Tescos, or any other supermaret. The fact of the matter it will happen and sooner when the Bournemouth Society and Bournemouth Cllrs get off their butts and get things moving. As pointed out, Tescos can wait, they have the money to do so, it is no skin off their nose.
.
I lived in Portsmouth when Tescos built a super store in Cosham/Paulsgrove. A similar problem arose with shops and residents in selling up hoping to get the highest figures. Tescos waited until the leases ran out, and then moved in the diggers. The same will happen in Kinson. So the grocer can hang on as long as he likes, in 15 months time it will be all over, and Tescos will go in.
.
I look forward to it happening, so that once again we have a decent choice of supermarkets north and south of the area.

Yes a Morrisons would be far better as there is only 4 in Dorset.
