PREPARATIONS are being stepped up as Bridport Carnival events get under way in the build up to the big day.

A packed programme of events is under way as excitement mounts before the grand procession on Saturday, August 18 and spectacular torchlight parade and fireworks on Sunday, August 19.

Carnival chairman Shaun Fox said: “Carnival has got off to a great start. Everyone is enjoying the events and we’re really looking forward to the procession and torchlight parade.

“There’s still time to enter the procession as a float or a walking entry so get involved and join in the fun.”

Carnival Princess Tiana Foot has already been crowned along with her attendants Ellie Rodgers, Georgina Boyer and Kirsty Ellison and Junior Carnival Princess Daniella Scadding.

Motorists are asked not to park their cars in St Swithun’s Road on carnival day afternoon so the floats can gather for the procession. West Street and South Street will also be closed for a time during the procession and into the evening.

There will be a children’s disco at the Conservative Club immediately after the procession and Mojo will be playing in South Street into the night.

Torches will be on sale in Bucky Doo Square from 6.30pm on Sunday for the torchlight parade.

The parade will leave South Street at 9pm for West Bay where there will be a bonfire, music from Freak Circus and fireworks.

The fireworks will be at 10.30pm, weather permitting. There is a shuttle bus home.

A funfair will be also be in Asker Meadows during the duration of the carnival.

Volunteers are needed to act as marshals for the carnival procession. No specific experience is required as yellow jackets and a full briefing will be given.

Marshals will also get a food voucher for the evening.

Procession entry forms are available in the Bridport News office.

The carnival programme is available inside this week’s paper.

The Misplaced Article competition will be in the programme but copies can also be obtained from AG Down funeral director in South Street.

Winners in the procession in last year’s carnival are asked to return their trophies to AG Down funeral directors in South Street.
