A man who watched from Ham Common, Poole as others failed to help a distressed sailor sitting on an upturned dinghy, is calling on mariners to be more aware.

Bergen Rixon, who was enjoying his fish and chip supper on Monday evening with friend Jay Hick, alerted a kayaker to the plight of the dinghy sailor who had capsized, with the boom stuck in the sand, and was having difficulty righting his boat.

“Jet skiers were going past and taking no notice of the man struggling to lift his dinghy out of the water,” said Mr Rixon from Lytchett Minster.

He said fishermen on the jetty and people on the beach were watching and no one did anything to help.

The kayaker paddled out and helped the man, who drifted in to the Royal Marines compound and was aided to land his boat on the beach where Mr Rixon helped him put it on a trailer.

“Unless people care about this sort of thing and keep an eye out for other people on the water, it’s amazing how quickly things can turn from what seems a happy situation to death,” said the former seaman.

Apart from the channels you can put your feet down in most of the harbour and if the boom was stuck in the sand it shows how shallow the water was.

Granted, but the mud is very sticky and you can easily sink up to your knees in it. not a good thing if the tide's coming in!

The point is alot of the people who use the harbour aren't actually 'mariners' and don't have a clue about marine etiquete. They are people who bid for a boat, jet ski or whatever on ebay then come down to the harbour to mess about on the water without actually having a clue what they're doing.
If the capsized sailor was using a recognised distress method, other water users should have responded to it.

We call the eBay type as the "Birmingham Navy" (no offence to Birmingham); they come into the harbour, throw their rubbish into the water, thrash around as if they are the only people who matter/exist and then go home again. I am completely against restricting water use and licensing etc. but the only way we are ever going to get a sensible solution to marine safety is to insist that all water users are correctly educated.
