ACTION man Ben Ryan was presented with a trophy by the mayor of Poole Cllr Carol Evans at the opening of GO Outdoors, a new superstore in the town.

Solicitor Ben was nominated for the Dorset Outdoor Adventurer of the Year award by Weldmar Hospicecare Tust, which offers specialist palliative care to people in north, south and west Dorset.

He took part in one of the toughest challenges in the world, the Marathon des Sables, earlier this year, which involves running more than 150 miles in six days in the searing desert heat of the Sahara while carrying kit.

Ben, of Stourpaine, is a partner with solicitors Dixon Stewart and vice-chairman of Blandford Rugby Club.

He had never even run a marathon before, but managed to complete the challenge and raise more than £3,000 for the hospice.

GO Outdoors superstore is located at Pitwines Retail Park. Before making the award, the company appealed to groups and individuals to nominate inspirational Dorset people who had faced an outdoor challenge or used outdoor pursuits to benefit their community.

A great achievement, however let's not forget Pete Ellis, also from Stourpaine, who on 25 May ascended Mt Everest, and in doing so is one of only 300 people to have climbed the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.
