Bournemouth residents enjoy Olympic-themed event
12:00pm Monday 23rd July 2012 in News By Katie Clark
ENERGETIC residents limbered up for an action-packed day of games and Olympic-themed fun in Bournemouth on Saturday.
People from Glenmoor Road, Winton, disappointed they didn’t get tickets for London 2012, decided to hold their own Olympic day, closing off their street for an afternoon of fun games and competitions.
More than 100 people gathered in the street, which was decked out in bunting and Olympic rings for the events, with a packed itinerary to ensure everyone had a chance to shine.
And it wasn’t just youngsters who were taking part, but residents of all ages joining in games.
Organiser Tim Drage said: “Lots of us applied for Olympic tickets and then didn’t get them so we decided if that was the case we’d hold our own.
“They may have spent billions of pounds, but it’s fair to say we’ve spent a lot less and had a great time.
“Everyone has been invited to contribute towards the cost of lunch and then people have made salads and cakes and all sorts.
“It’s been a really great day and such a good occasion. Everyone has really enjoyed themselves.
“Plus the sun has come. We couldn’t have asked for more.”
The jam-packed agenda which started with an Olympic Torch ceremony to kick things off, was then followed by egg and spoon races, a three-legged sprint, balloon relay race, a hobby horse parade and assault course.
And for those not concerned about getting wet, there was a “total wipeout” water challenge followed by musical chairs and then the all-important medal ceremony.
