HUNDREDS of children cheered two Olympic flame-carriers when part of the Torch Relay was specially recreated for them.

Branksome Heath Middle School sports coach Sue Gillingham and former pupil Vicky Olive had both carried the torch in other parts of the county – but returned to Parkstone to do it again. They ran a stretch of road between Branksome Heath Middle and Sylvan First School.

Sue Gillingham – known to pupils as Miss G – was nominated as a torchbearer by Year Six pupils after devoting much of her spare time to her school’s successful sports teams. She said carrying the torch in Wareham had been “amazing”.

“I’m so honoured that the pupils nominated me,” she said. Vicky Oliver, 17, who now goes to Parkstone Grammar School, carried the torch at Stourpaine.

She has been a member of the Youth Parliament and addressed the House of Commons on children’s rights.

“Miss G took me to my first meeting of the school council at Branksome Heath. I wouldn't have been carrying the torch if it wasn’t for her,” she said.

Branksome head Stuart Fox said the whole school had watched the live link to Miss Gillingham’s run.

“It was an emotional time for all the staff because the children just stood and cheered.

“It’s so good to have two people linked to Branksome carrying the torch,” he said. Pupil Varun Harpale, 12, said: “I was really proud of my school that one of our teachers was carrying the torch.”

Adam Slade, 12, said: “It makes you really proud of this school.”
