A WHIRLWIND fundraising campaign has smashed its £3,600 target in just ten days.

The Harry’s Wheels campaign to buy an electric wheelchair for little Harry Churchill from Poole soared past its hefty target last Tuesday and the three-year-old could be zooming about in his new chair in a matter of weeks.

It was launched by mum-of-four Emily Kelly, 29.

She was moved to act after reading in the Echo about Harry and his one-year-old brother Cody, both living with the devastating and painful genetic condition epidermolysis bullosa, or EB, which causes their skin to blister.

Emily set up a Facebook group and JustGiving site and, with a group of supporters and friends, organised a series of fundraisers – most of which haven’t even taken place yet.

They hit their target with donations online – including £1,000 from an anonymous donor – after word spread like wildfire through social networking sites.

A delighted Emily told the Echo: “Everyone was sharing the link to the JustGiving page and it just went everywhere. It just shows what can happen when people come together. It’s amazing.”

Harry and Cody’s dad Chris told the Echo: “We just couldn’t believe it when we heard we had tears in our eyes.”

Doctors predicted neither Harry or Cody would make his first birthday – but with round the clock devotion from their loving parents Steph and Chris, they are defying expectations.

And yet the couple have faced stares and even abuse from ignorant strangers accusing them of hurting their children.

Chris added: “It’s so nice to know people out there do care – hopefully this will be the start of start of something better for us.”

The Harry’s Wheels campaign has topped £3,700 so far and the team are going to keep fundraising, with proceeds going to EB charity DEBRA and to the Churchill family as a whole. See justgiving.com/harrys-wheels
