Ladies who fancy themselves behind the wheel are needed to step forward for the “ultimate driving event” in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The Ladies Driving Challenge at Bovington army camp raised around £19,000 last year, which financed 950 hours of free nursing care to patients and their families in their own homes.

Marie Curie Cancer Care regional events manager Jon Duckham urged volunteers to “throw caution to the wind and take part in the ultimate driving event.”

He added: “Picture yourself behind the wheel of some of the most unusual and challenging vehicles you’ll ever dream of driving – anything from a double-decker bus to a fire engine, a HGV to a monster truck.”

Last year 115 women took part in the challenge, where they raced lorries, a double-decker and a fire engine around a large track.

Mum-of-one Becky Hassett, of Wareham, was one of the ladies taking part.

She said: “This is my first time and I’ve really enjoyed it, the bus drivers have been excellent.

“We’ve also been on the 4X4 off-road ones and cherry picker.

“I definitely want to come again.”

The work of Marie Curie nurses enables patients to remain in their own homes, surrounded by loved ones, during the difficult later stages of their lives.

Mr Duckham explained: “Entry is £10 and each lady is asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship.

“Places are limited for this challenge which is taking place on Sunday September 23 at Bovington army camp.”
