DELIGHTED staff and students at a Bournemouth junior school are celebrating after it left special measures in just over a year.

Government inspectors ranked Queen’s Park Junior School ‘good’ with ‘outstanding’ features during an inspection carried out last month with just two days’ notice.

In March last year the East Way school was placed in special meausres when Ofsted inspectors ruled it was failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education.

Since then the former head teacher has resigned and Brian Hooper, also the head of the Tregonwell Academy, has taken the reins in the new role of Executive Head Teacher.

Inspectors were particularly impressed with behaviour and safety at the school, which caters for 327 children between the ages of seven and 11.

In a report just published they said: “This is a good school because the quality of teaching and learning is now good. “Pupils’ behaviour and attitudes to learning are outstanding.

“The leadership team is bringing about rapid improvement through rigorous monitoring and evaluation.”

Inspectors have now asked the school to raise attainment in English and maths to above average and to increase the proportion of outstanding teaching.

In a letter to pupils they said: “Your attitudes to learning and your behaviour are outstanding. You listen well to each other in assemblies and are courteous to others around the school.”

Mr Hooper told the Daily Echo: “I am so proud of all the pupils, staff, parents and governors for all the hard work they have put in to helping the school not only be removed from special measures but to be rated good with outstanding features.

“Parents can now feel confident that their children will receive an excellent education at Queen’s Park Junior School.

“It is a real privilege to be Executive Head Teacher.”
