IT’S fair to say the Priory School in Christchurch is one big happy family for pupils, staff and parents.

A traditional Christian school with an excellent reputation, it is clear to see why families move within the school’s town centre catchment in order to get a place for their children.

More than 140 applications were received this year for just 30 reception places, giving a glimpse into the huge demand for a school like the Priory.

Parents praise the innovative and exciting learning techniques staff implement while still retaining the traditional school feel and high standards of behaviour.

Head teacher Claire King, who has been at the helm of the oversubscribed school since 2007, said the relationship the school held with parents, outside agencies, and former pupils was hugely important to them.

She said: “We don’t just have the team within the school. It goes so much further than that. And that is what makes the Priory special.

“Because we are a small school, we are able to really build on that sense of family.

“All of the senior pupils know the infants’ names.

“We are quite traditional in many respects. Our relationship with the Priory Church is very important to us and our Year 6 pupils are given the opportunity to be confirmed before they leave.

“But it is the little things that matter the most. Parents come in and do odd jobs, they volunteer to help out in lessons – we’re one big team.”

The staff are also supported by the Friends of Priory School, who raise funds for school resources through fairs and other events.

And pupils are also taught the value of independence, something noted upon when they move onto secondary schools.

Miss King added: “The success of this school is a whole school success. Everyone here is dedicated to providing the best education and schooling they can. And that shows with how our pupils behave and respect each other.

“Even if they are ill they don’t stay off school and our attendance record is just over 96 per cent.

“Each pupil here can self-manage themselves and they are always so energetic and motivated.

“It is all part of preparing them for life. Every child at the Priory matters.”

Chair of governors, Judy Jamieson added: “I’m really proud to be part of the Priory School. All the staff work so hard to ensure that the children leave the school with wonderful memories of their time here.”
