Dorset mountain bike salute to Royal Marine

Bournemouth Echo: MISSED: Marine James Wright with his family MISSED: Marine James Wright with his family

GET on your bike for a charity fundraiser held in tribute to a Royal Marine from Weymouth.

The family and friends of Marine James Wright, who was killed last year while in Afghanistan, will be holding a mountain bike challenge tomorrow.

The three-hour challenge called The ‘Big Reach’ Mountain Bike Enduro Charity Challenge after the marine’s nickname, will take place at Rogershill Raceway, near Bere Regis.

All the money will go to the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

The marine from 42 Commando J Company got the nickname ‘Big Reach’ after befriending a gangster of that name in New York.

He died during an attack on Checkpoint Kamiabi, Afghanistan on August 5, 2011, aged 22.

He leaves behind parents, David and Sallie, sister Katie, partner Shelley Robertson and baby daughter Lilly, known as Little Reach, who was born on December 3, 2011.

His father David Wright, together with James’ friends, Rogershill Raceway and Weymouth-business Mud, Sweat and Gears, organised the event.

His friends and family will be taking part as ‘Team Dangerous.’ Mr Wright said it would be a fitting tribute to James who liked to go mountain biking, kayaking, skiing and take part in Moto X.

He added: “You can do as many laps as you want. People can come in and have a rest and then go back out and do a bit more.”

The course will be a four-mile loop for the challenge course and a three-mile loop for an easier route.

The course will be suitable for basic mountain bikes and helmets must be worn.

Mr Wright said: “I’m really looking forward to it, everything fell into place for it.”

The cost is £15 per person on the day and it will start at 11am. Sign-in will be from 9am to 10.30am.

Teams will have to enter a team name and entry forms are available from mudsweatngears.co.uk or by calling 01305 784849.
