HUNDREDS of Diamond Jubilee parties will be held across Dorset in the coming days but few will be able to say the Queen herself turned up to the occasion.

But at Cranborne First School a papier mache model of the Sovereign, complete with handbag and pearls, was the star attraction.

‘Her Royal Highness’ arrived in her horsedrawn carriage to start the village school’s jubilee celebrations.

Volunteer helper Sue Shewell played the role of lady in waiting and received a posy on behalf of her papier mache boss from pupil Katherine Andrews, aged eight.

The rest of the day was taken up with traditional games and pastimes including country dancing and marbles and the children also enjoyed a street party-style lunch in the playground.
