Wanted: hit and run mobility scooter driver hunted by police
A HIT and run mobility scooter rider left a woman lying injured on the ground in Christchurch Police have just released a CCTV image of a woman they want to speak to after the collision at the Monday market in the High Street.
The incident took place in front of Reynolds butchers’ van, which was parked outside Zoo jewellery store. Police said a 63-year-old woman from Christchurch was knocked to the floor and suffered injuries to her head and legs.
PC Jim Perks from Christchurch police said: “The rider of the dark red scooter did not stop and continued toward Sopers Lane. The woman we would like to speak to is about 50, with long blonde hair, of stocky build, wearing a light coloured jacket.”
The injured woman was out shopping with her mother and had just stopped to buy pork belly.
Scott, from Reynolds butchers, said: “The scooter lady drove into her and dragged her along the floor for probably two or three feet. She was screaming, I think from the shock.
“The lady reversed her scooter back and sat here for about five minutes. Somebody said ‘get her number’ or ‘that’s the one’ and she went off in a panic.”
Tony, 50, from a jewellery stall, said: “Nobody gave chase. What are you going to do with an old lady?
“Wrestle her to the ground?”
Phil, 53, from a burger van, said: “I was helping the injured lady. She didn’t know quite where she was or what her name was.”
He added: “I see the problem all the time – people looking to the side at the stalls but driving forwards.”
The accident happened at 1.50pm on Monday, April 30 but police only released details yesterday.
If you have information you can call police on 101.
Police give safety tips
POLICE recently held a ‘Safe Scoot’ workshop after complaints about the way scooters are being driven.
They staged it with Mike Ruddick, owner of All Mobility on Wick Lane.
PC Dave Williams said in one recent incident an elderly lady stepped out of a shop and a scooter tipped her over.
The rider also drove off without stopping.
