SCORES of pupils and parents enjoyed a well-earned ‘bikers’ breakfast’ to celebrate the opening of their school’s new cycle shelter.

Around 250 children and parents cycled or scooted to Moordown St John’s Primary School on Thursday to watch Bournemouth Cllr Nicola Greene cut the ribbon on their new bike shelter.

The shelter was jointly funded by Sustrans and Bournemouth council and is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to encourage pupils to choose a healthier and more sustainable way of travelling to school.

Sustrans Bike It officer Jason Falconer has been working with the school since last September and the message is getting through.

Back in 2010, there were only 10 children regularly cycling to school, now there are up to 40 on bikes and more scooters.

Jason said: “The new shelter will encourage even more kids to cycle to school, safe in the knowledge that their bike will be kept secure and dry.

“We know that kids who cycle to school are healthier and arrive to class more alert and ready to learn.”

And headteacher Peter Herbert said: “Jason has come in and helped children fix up their bikes, he’s led cycling activities in the school playground and he’s taken groups of children to the new velodrome at Slades Farm, which they have really enjoyed.”
