Mum Mandy Greaves welcomed the news that workers earning £9,205 or less will no longer pay income tax.

Around two million workers – many of them women doing part-time jobs – will be freed from paying tax by next April.

Portlander Mandy said: “I’m a lunchtime supervisor at Royal Manor School and I am way below the threshold anyway.

“My husband Alan is likely to benefit because he can earn more before he pays tax.

“But they seem to give with one hand and take with the other – you can fly abroad for the cost of filling up our family car with petrol.

“There are no competitive fuel prices on the island because there is just one petrol station here.

“I don’t think this is a Budget that helps us personally.”
