NEW “no cycling” signs are proving their worth in a bid to keep cyclists off the pavements in New Milton Town Centre.

Residents and shoppers raised concerns that someone could be knocked over or injured by thoughtless cyclists using the pavements around the town.

And following complaints to the police, New Milton sergeant Darrel Mason organised ‘no cycling’ signs, with funding from the Safer New Forest Partnership.

The signs are now on lampposts around the town centre and Sgt Mason is pleased to report that there have been no complaints about pavement cyclists since they were installed.

“Not only was the practice of cycling on pavements dangerous to pedestrians and the cyclists, it is also illegal for those over the age of 10,” said Sgt Mason.

“I hope these signs will keep cyclists on the road in the future and leave the pavements safe.”

Cllr Jill Cleary, New Forest District Council portfolio holder for housing and communities, said: “We are delighted that the signs have already had such a positive effect.

“It was a simple but effective solution to this antisocial behaviour and the signs have made New Milton a safer place for all.

“If people are worried about cycling along the busy roads in the town centre, they can dismount and walk with their bicycle.”
