DESPITE tropical storms and flash floods, blue skies and sunshine on Friday ensured record numbers flocked to the annual Bournemouth Air Festival.

More than 220,000 festival-goers packed the beaches to watch the spectacular flying display during the day, while more than 85,000 stayed to enjoy the Night Air's flying and buzzing entertainment along the promenade and at Pier Approach.

The number of visitors equalled the same record levels as those for Saturday 2009, the best attendance to date since the festival’s launch four years ago.

Bournemouth Air Festival director Jon Weaver, said: “We were deluged with rain on Thursday and awash with people on Friday.

“The combination of the fantastic weather on Friday and the complete wash-out on Thursday meant we were quite literally inundated with visitors.

“There was a fantastic, really positive atmosphere, after the misery of the previous day. It was a wonderful flying programme and the night air displays were simply magical, with people making the utmost of the evening entertainment.”
