THERE was Hollywood glamour as far as the eye could see as Wareham Carnival week reached its climax on Sunday.
A week of fun ended with a procession through the town, with the bright lights of Tinsel Town coming to Purbeck as groups from across the community took part.
They included Wessex Majorettes, the Lowry family – who brought a flavour of Bollywood to the day – Alice in Wonderland courtesy of Lady St Mary First School, Wareham and Purbeck Young Farmers with a Flintstones theme and Wizard of Oz float from Wareham Guides.
The fun kicked off last Monday with a screening of The African Queen at the Rex cinema.
Events during the week also included treasure hunts, a grand quiz, a murder mystery event around the town’s pubs, the Golden Bridge Awards – celebrating the people and businesses of the town – and a casino night.
The procession on Sunday was complemented by stalls, a fun fair, live music, a duck race, dog race and shark race – involving 6ft inflatable sharks.
Carnival chairman Heather Scharnhorst said the Hollywood theme had given “everyone a good subject for dressing up”.
She added: “It’s been a really good theme and people have really entered into it.
“We’re lucky because so many carnivals are struggling and we seem to be doing OK, we have a lot of support from our community and they look forward to their carnival every year.
“It’s one of the highlights of the year here.”
