THE Conservatives have won a landslide majority on Bournemouth council.

The leader of the council’s Liberal Democrat opposition said her party had suffered “a national kicking”.

Former council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin – who resigned as leader after it was revealed he had viewed pornography on his council laptop – lost his bid for election in Queens Park by two votes, after it went to a second recount which concluded around 6.30pm on Friday.

The final result was Conservatives 45, Labour 3, Liberal Democrats 3, and Independents 3.

In Kinson North, it was a wipeout for the Liberal Democrats who had all three seats.

In Kinson South, Conservatives gained one seat from Labour. The result, which went through to a recount, came in at 2.30pm on Friday.

Cllr Claire Smith, the Lib Dem leader who lost her seat, told the Daily Echo last night: “I think we’re getting a national kicking.”

She said feedback on the Lib Dems’ local performance had been positive but added: “Unfortunately, a lot of people have wanted to send a message to Nick Clegg. This was their earliest opportunity to do that.”

Conservative council leader Cllr Peter Charon said this morning: “It’s been an outstanding night for the Conservative group in Bournemouth. It’s subject to the final recounts, but without those it looks as though we will end up with as big or even bigger a majority than we did four years ago.

“It seems our message resonated with the residents of Bournemouth. It wasn’t a close result.”

For much of the night, it looked as though the Lib Dems might be annihilated in Bournemouth.

But their fortunes improved when councillors Roger West and Sue Levell held onto their seats in Redhill and Northbourne.

The other member for the area is Conservative council leader Cllr Peter Charon, who topped the poll in the ward.

Independent councillor Ron Whittaker, who easily held his Throop and Muscliff seat, said: “I’m sad that we’ve lost one or two good councillors from various parties tonight. I find that sad because I like to vote for the individual, the person who I think will represent the ward the best.”

He said he was a resident of Kinson and knew how hard Claire and Richard Smith worked for their electors.

In 2007, the Conservatives won 41, Liberal Democrats 7, Labour 3, and Independent 3.

In 2003, the Conservatives won 16, the Liberal Democrats 33, Labour 3, Independent 2.
