DREAMS of a new home could finally become a reality for Poole Town FC in just a matter of weeks.

The non-league club’s application to build a ground at Canford Magna is due to be heard by Poole’s planning committee on March 17.

If the green light is given to the ambitious club’s £2 million plans, the first ball could be kicked on the new turf next season.

It would represent an end to a saga that has stretched back to 1994, when the Dolphins were acrimoniously forced out of Poole Stadium.

Today, the team host Torpoint Athletic in the quarter finals of the FA Vase – one of the biggest games in their history.

Chris Reeves, the club’s vice-chairman, said it was a chance to “put a jewel in the borough’s crown in leisure terms”.

He added: “This is a fantastic opportunity to provide our club with a suitable home while also establishing a community facility that will be also enjoyed by so many.”

Support for the Canford plans continues to swell, with more than 400 parties having expressed their backing for the scheme.

Endorsing the proposals, Sport England said Poole Town had put together “a strong case” and urged the council to back the club.

Mr Reeves thanked planning consultants Tanner & Tilley for their efforts in helping to win such widespread support for the plans.

The Canford scheme would see construction of a new ground, complete with 150-seater stand, off Magna Road.

There would also be a state-of-the-art astroturf pitch and clubhouse facilities for use by the wider community.

Poole Town’s need for a new ground grows ever pressing, with the club on course to win promotion from the Wessex League this season.

The reigning champions have missed out on elevation to the next level for the last two seasons due to unsuitable facilities at their current home at Tatnam Farm.
