BIRD watchers were still gathering in the New Forest’s Downton area over the weekend desperate for a chance to witness the majestic flight of the white-tailed eagle that has taken up temporary residence there.

Some were lucky on Saturday with three sightings logged on the Hampshire Orithological Society website between 9.30am and 1.45pm.

The first sighting was just prior the start of a pheasant shoot, a second person saw the bird heading west towards Barton at 12.15pm and then it was seen, from a bus, flying in the vicinity of Angel Lane at 1.45pm.

But the bird, thought to be a juvenile of about two-and-a-half years old, has ventured further afield.

Diane Gillam told the Daily Echo she had seen it in Burley Road, Bransgore, on January 4.

“I was amazed to see such a large bird in the road and it was quite a sight when it took off as I got nearer to it,” she said.
