LICENSING officers will spend more time watching films following the row about plans to show a controversial horror movie in Bournemouth.
The town’s Pier Theatre is volunteering to have its licence amended so it cannot show films that have not been rated by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) unless they have been shown to the local council.
The decision means licensing officers will have to vet any such films, including the low-budget and student movies that have been the backbone of other festivals at the venue. If officers have concerns about a film, they will refer to councillors on the borough’s licensing board.
The row was sparked after organisers of the British Horror Film Festival planned to screen the movie A Serbian Film in an uncut version which had not been passed by the BBFC. The film was pulled from the event, but officers did vet several unrated short films and succeeded in getting another 17-minute movie dropped.

"As for the degenerate artists, I forbid them to force their so-called experiences upon the public. they are criminals, and should go to prison. I will purge the nation of them".....Adolf Hitler.
I would imagine they only want to have a look now their laptop **** habits are being scrutinised a bit more closely!

So does this reinforce the view that i had at the time? Did the people at the council who compalined watch the film? I know there were subjects in the film that people could find upsetting but in the film 'The accused' it had a graphic rape scene (of Jodie Foster) and people went on about how great that film was! I suppose you could you the old 'If you dont like it dont watch it'!

This is a shame.
Changing artists work by state censorship only negatively affects cinemas and film makers and promotes piracy.
I've been to festivals but wouldn't make the effort if the films were censored or possibly being pulled.
Censorship is redundant now that we are fully in the age of the internet and downloading, everything is available, and in uncut forms.
I could download and watch the full uncut 'A Serbian Film', and spend my Sunday afternoon watching it in the comfort of my own home; illegally (due to copyright reasons that is) as our esteemed councellor already confessed to doing.
What harm does showing uncut, shocking films in a festival environment, to a cine literate audience really cause ? Really ? It happens around the world every month, so tell me, what castastrophy to society has it caused ?
Its just like the ignorant hysterior that surrounded the showing of Life of Brian, or the Excorcist, and the video nasties nonsense.
Tabloid hysteria believers please don't confuse cinema with real life crimes, and don't judge what you know nothing about and have not seen.

Given that the film may be viewed online any time, virtually anywhere, can someone explain what censoring films at a specialist event like this achieves?
.
The only result I would see is Bournemouth being written off as a venue!

The real issues here are just what is wrong with our so called civilised society, when this sort of purile garbage is so popular.
At one time the tv used to announce that a film or programme contained foul language (strong language is its current translation) to warn those inteligent and civilised people who would be offended by this, now it is announced as if this is a special treat and a main reason to watch. Where once a program was adveritsed as having great sceanery or a good plot or special effects etc now it is advertised "contains strong language and violence and sex scenes" as though this is something really glorious and exciting about it.
We are constantly seeing advertisements for computer games, all of which feature and seek to glorify violent gory death, murder and destruction or highly illegal behavior such as car theft.
We see loads of men walking around in camo patterned casual gear, they will pay any price to stroll about in this gear other than take the queens shilling for it to be provided free.
At one time having a really good night out may have resulted in getting a bit drunk. Now it seems the whole concept of a good time is to be totally plastered and falling in the gutter throwing up.

Oh GOOD the more films they show at the pier theatre the more chances we get at fishing of the jetty in the evenings. The pier should be kept open at night ..not locked up. Should have night vision cams so the police can catch vandals. Then the rest of us can enjoy the pier 24/7
