WINTER certainly showed its face in Bournemouth yesterday, as the area became the coldest place in the whole of the South. Overnight the mercury plummeted to -4.9c at The Met Office station at Hurn with the clear conditions and cloud-free skies resulting in an early morning frost across the area. But despite the dusting off of the de-icer and windscreen scrapers after the summer months, forecasters warn we may not need them over the next few days. Dr Richard Wild from Bournemouth-based WeatherNet said: “I would say it is not common for Bournemouth to be in the list of coldest places in the UK. “It is certainly not unprecedented but it is rare. “Where the readings are taken from at Hurn is a much colder place than many spots along the coast, which would explain this result. “We were in top position for the coldest temperatures along with Charlwood in Surrey and Benson in Oxfordshire.” He added: “It will still be relatively cool on Friday but nowhere near the lows of last night. “We will see temperatures between 5-6c rise to around 13c on Friday and winds will be much stronger with temperatures still below average. “On Saturday there will be some heavy rain in the early hours clearing up around mid-late morning. “The rest of the day will be pleasant and improving. “Sunday will be dry with temperatures around 11c.”
