A MEN’S club has decided to “break new ground” and admit women.

North Bournemouth and District Probus Club voted in favour of the move amid concern over falling numbers.

The club believes it is the first in the South to take such a step and described it as a “historic development”.

Probus Clubs traditionally cater for men and women, but separately. Retired professional and business people meet up to keep their brains and diaries busy.

They might hear speakers, go on holidays, trips to the theatre, or nights out at restaurants.

Member Ray Burnish, 64, from Tuckton, said: “There was some general uneasiness about it. But people realised it was this or the club couldn’t continue in 12 to 18 months’ time.

“I think women tend to be more friendly than men anyway. And I think it’s also a reflection of the role women are now playing in society.”

The club was down to around 30 members, about half the number needed for a vigorous club.

They have already had interest, but the decision has surprised some people.

“I’ve never heard of a mixed club before,” said a shocked lady from New Milton Ladies Probus, who asked not to be named.

“Our members prefer women only – it’s our girls’ night out from the men.”

Bournemouth and District Probus is the town’s oldest and has a membership of 75.

Secretary, Arnold Lewis, said he believed there were only “one or two” mixed clubs in the country.

Probus has no central body so individual clubs make up their own rules.

There are far fewer women’s clubs, although the principle is the same.

Mr Burnish said: “I joined 18 months ago and I’ve always been made to feel very welcome.”

Some members spoke against the mixed policy but no one actually voted against it and there are no die-hard opponents.

One member backed the move but admitted to the Daily Echo: “We’re going out on a limb.”

The open membership starts from October 28.

There will be a special buffet evening at the Mayfair Hotel in Bath Road from 7pm that is free to guests who want to find out more.

So will Mr Burnish’s “other half” be joining up?

“No,” he laughed. “She’s glad to get rid of me once a month!”
