Jeremy Clarkson praises Bournemouth and Palmair

Bournemouth Airport and airline Palmair have received a boost from one of the UK’s most outspoken columnists.

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson wrote in his page in The Sun on Saturday that he had initially been “disappointed” to find that his two-week holiday would be starting with a Palmair flight from Bournemouth.

He had imagined that “things would not go well”.

The often-scathing journalist wrote: “The plane – probably a Sopwith Camel – would be marooned in Tenerife and would not be able to pick me up until it had deposited a party of Swedes in Yugoslavia.

“I’d therefore be spending my entire fortnight at Bournemouth Airport. A place where Coca-Cola has not yet been invented and all you can have is mead.

“Wrong. Bournemouth Airport is brilliant and Palmair was even better. We took off on time, landed on time, the food was nice and we didn’t crash once.”

It serves as a high-profile boost for both the airport and Bournemouth-based Palmair, who have both suffered during the recession – Ryanair and Palmair announced in the summer that they would not be flying from Hurn this winter.

Palmair boss David Skillicorn said he knew that someone with the name Jeremy Clarkson had booked with the airline, but didn’t think anything more of it.

“It can’t do any harm at all and he was complimentary about the airport as well, which will please them too,” he said.

“In an industry that’s had very little good news for as long as I can remember it’s good to get a pat on the back and particularly from someone so high profile.”

The writer has not always been so complimentary about Bournemouth in his column. Last year he lambasted roadworks on the A338 and the town’s traffic problems.

We should be grateful and proud to have excellent regional airport facilities in our area. The government should switch on and encourage and subsidise airlines and tour operators to use these facilities. Being a frequent flyer I have found that it was quicker to fly into Bournemouth and travel to my office in Waterloo by train than it was to land at Gatwick and Heathrow and do the same. Well done Bournemouth. Maybe when Bournemouth Council open its new IT training facilities the airport usage will quadruple!

PalmAir far to expencive, prefer TrailFinders much better service - passport service, visa service, insurance, and medical services, good for long haul flights. Use them for the last 20 years. best in the industry. PalmAir out dated and overprice on short hall and long hall airticket's. last ticket office i would use.

He was sitting at the window on the other side of the plane from us on the way out to Corfu the Wednesday of the Air Festival. When we were waiting to turn onto the runway to take off, the Red Arrows were arriving. We could see them by looking across the plane through his window as they landed one after another in a stick. Mr Clarkeson was looking straight ahead and only spotted the last one! Mind you the pilot might have told us that if we looked out the left side we would see the Reds landing.

Subsidise? Why should tax payers subsidise air travel? Next you will want us to provide a private jet for your visits to the office with a waitress on board for your every whim.

Hey you are absolutely right. I like to give something back to the community, so I have employed 3 local people who were out of work. I have a guy called Stephen MacLoughlin who loads my bags and cleans my lapton, and two ladies called Pam Donellan & Joy Postings who push the trolley and serve tea, mind you the women are always chatting to each other secretly in the toilet.

It's 30 min from Gatwick to Victoria, then 5 min on the Tube to Waterloo. Heathrow to Paddington in 25 min, then 20 min on Tube. How on Earth could you possibly find it quicker to fly to Bournemouth, then presumably take a 15 min taxi ride to the train station, where the train will take 2 hours? Is your real name Pinnochio?

(Boracay) I agree that 'trailfinders', are the best as I also use their London branches and they have great many services others like palmair rubbish dont and cant or wont do. Soon we should see palmair in the bankrupt court before their is another general election. No matter how good they are within the piggon hole local services local people wont save them if they dont have the money to pay the over price charges!!

Comparing trailfinders to palmair is slightly unfair one is a small local tour operator the other is a travel agent that offers worldwide tailor made holidays?!!

If you want a package holiday from Bournemouth airport you will find Palmair is as competitive as any others that operate from Bournemouth.

Palmair are good at what they do and trailfinders are good at what they do too however they are both very different businesses so comparing them doesnt make any sense!

I am very happy to have our fabulous airport, having taken note of Ryanairs option to not fly during the winter months, I have booked to fly to Alicante on the 27th of this month and am really looking forward to what will be another comfortable and enjoyable journey from my local airport, I paid £42 return to spain and instead of travelling in November for my birthday, I brought it forward a month or two, we, frequent travellers, MUST continue to support our lovely new airport and applaud the fantastic work it has been doing, I had a two week holiday with Palmair this year and it was also fantastic, we are very lucky to have such facilities nearby and should use them as much as possible.

Ah boracay !!
You have no idea what service is all about, you stick with trailfinders & leave the people who enjoy Palmairs 1st class local service to the people who know what is best.
Support your local company who have been looking after the people of the area for far longer than your trailfinders who after all are just a travel agent.I have had many holidays with Palmair & Bath Travel & they have always been good.

I also agree with Abu Thanett, about TrailFinders total First Class Service. Never like Palair that much use to use them off and on years ago but dont know why some people rave about them as they are nothing super special. They were better 20 years ago, but would rather use Thompson Fly to book before Palmair. Yes price wise over inflated.

With Stephen MacLoughlin on board I would be very careful what the in-flight movie is.

I reckon Borocay also goes under the name "Abuthanet". Both have the same standard of awful spelling and grammar, also the same stupid opinions. What sort of moron would want a long standing local company to go bankrupt leading to the loss of many local jobs? If you don't like them don't use them, Simple!! Or are you just jealous because you cant afford to use them??
For your information I use neither companies but never mind eh!

Just waiting for Robert Dunford of Tailor Made to make a comment!
"We cannot say too much but we can tell you Mr Clarkson was in town and someone said he was looking in our window. We are confident that Mr Clarkson will soon be buying a Seven Development home as hr must realise that this area is better than Malibu. It has been a record year for us and we continue to grow from strength to strength"

So why can't I get a flight into Hurn from Paris, Dijon or anywhere in France? Next year I have to take a train via London. At least back in the stone age you had several flights a day to Cherbourg (and you could fly your car over too in an ancient Bristol Superfreighter!)
(key words "hurt-type" marvellous!)
