"Tesco made me feel like a shoplifter for buying 1p England shirts"

A Poole man says he was stunned when he was “made to feel like a shoplifter” by Tesco staff after buying 15 England T-shirts for just 1p each.

Father-of-four Russell Wood from Oakdale could hardly believe it when the T-shirt he’d picked up in Tesco, Fleetsbridge, rang through the till at just 1p.

The top, from among reduced World Cup stock, is emblazoned with cartoons of England manager Fabio Capello and some of the star players and the words “On our way – the finals.” Bought “for the irony” Mr Wood explained.

It was down from £8 to £2 – but it rang through at just 1p.

“Some might say they’re a bit overpriced given the team’s recent performance,” he said.

Delighted with the bargain Mr Wood, 35, went back to pick up more for friends and family.

He took 15 to the self-service till – the only one open at the time as it was after midnight on Wednesday morning.

But as he rang them through the price caught the attention of staff.

He was stopped from leaving by a supervisor and a security guard, who told him they couldn’t let him have them for 1p – even though he’d already paid for them.

The self-employed broadcast wiring man said he was detained for some 15 minutes – during which time he claims the staff tried to “emotionally blackmail him” by telling him the young assistant manning the tills would be fired if they let him leave.

Eventually the message came from the night manager that he should take the clothing – but not before staff had tried to refund 15p on his card.

Mr Wood said: “It seems staff were unaware of the basic laws of transactions. I was made to feel like a shoplifter.

“You can’t treat people like criminals who have done nothing wrong.”

Tesco put the problem down to a pricing error, and apologised.

A spokesman said: “We apologise to the customer for any upset caused and are pleased to have resolved this issue quickly in the store.”

I would think he would feel worse than a shoplifter if he wears them out in public. What a sad'o for buying one in the first place. They were probably checking his sanity.

Typical Tesco Staff behaviour. I was treated with complete contempt whilst trying to find loose change to buy a £3 pair of school socks to save having to use a debit card. The (completely unbusy till operator) said not a word, and almost threw the socks back onto the counter and did not offer a bag. Whenever I am asked if I have a club card and reply 'no', that is the end of any conversation and i leave feeling as if i am wrong to not have a card!! I now never go near a tesco if i can possibly help it. But I dont suppose they worry too much....plenty of people follow the crowd and shop there despite the companys record in various economical and environmental issues.

most decent people if they noticed a pricing mistake like that would smile to themselves and quickly leave the store! not go back and buy as many as they can carry. i am on the shop workers side!!!

Oh come on now, Skatha.

Today's paper features the chance to win £41,000 in the Spot the Ball contest AND a competition to win a free family pass, plus fancy dress costumes, to Camp Bestival.

That's definitely worth more than the paper it's printed on.... :)

Tesco is a greedy company that wants to sell everything and drive all the competition out of business. I try to limit my visits there now and use other shops if i can.

if you feel so strongly why limit your visits! just stay away! or is it because they sell things you want, cheaper than you can buy elsewhere. bit hypocritical is it not???

Just a note folks: we've no problem with criticism but that doesn't entitle you to throw personal abuse at staff members. So please don't, or we'll have to suspend, ban or delete you. Thanks.

Don't Tescos realise that 'Every Little Helps' towards their massive profits....£3.4 Billion last year, that equates to approximately £6500 per minute.Blimey, I think that is even more than Wayne Rooney gets!
Keep your Shirt On!

I would probably use those shirts for cleaning my windows or possibly the car!

I will never use Tesco again after they accused me of stealing a newspaper even though I'd used the correct voucher to pay for it.

Once he had paid and it had been accepted the transaction was complete and the store could do nothing about it. If they hadn't yet accepted his money that's a different matter. The price asked for agoods is called "an invitation to treat", which means they offer the goods at a price, you offer to pay for then at that price, but they don't have to accept your offer. Once paid for the contract us complete, but consumers have rights if the goods are faulty or not as described even if they were sold cheap.
......
I haven't shopped for at Tesco for at least 7 years for three incidents they would deny, but have actually happened and are in their records, but they put conditions on the settlement.

It's Tesco's own fault for making the pricing error (if that's what it was) in the first place. Once the customer had paid for them, that's it - too late to ask him to return them.

Agree totally uvox44.
The rise and rise of Tescos leaves little choice.

Its funny, Communism was laughed at as it took choice away from an individual. It looks Capitalism is doing the same.

I'd like to correct you here... the law says that once you have bought the items, the store cannot force you to return the goods or pay the difference to their actual price.

However, if the error is spotted pre-sale then yes, the store can refuse the sale, but not once the items have been paid for.

So climb down from your high horse, yeah?
