Abnormal load stuck In Hamworthy side street

ANGRY drivers faced long delays in Poole on Tuesday morning as an abnormal load turned the rush hour into traffic chaos.

A huge 90ft lorry, which was attempting to get to the harbour, blocked traffic along busy Blandford Road in Hamworthy.

The trucker was trying to reverse his massive load into a side road to turn around, but police say it was an impossible manoeuvre.

The lorry, that was carrying large pylon pipes, became stuck and traffic quickly built up in both directions.

Some drivers reported 40 minute delays in getting to work, while others abandoned plans to drive over Poole bridge and opted to head the long way around Holes Bay into town.

One exasperated motorist said: “I spent at least 20 minutes stuck in a traffic jam while all this was going on, that ended up making me late for work.

“There was a long queue of traffic going nowhere.

“Why do huge vehicles like this have to move their loads around during the rush hour blocking a major route into Poole?

“There should be a better way of organising loads like this on our roads.”

Traffic police, who described the scenes as “chaotic”, were forced to set up traffic controls and eventually the lorry was taken back around the bay and down into Poole Harbour along the A350.

It eventually arrived around 10.30am, some three hours after first getting stuck.

A Dorset police spokesman said: “Officers said it had been given a route to take that turned out to be impossible to make.

“Traffic quickly built up along Blandford Road.”

abnormal loads moving throughout dorset high volume areas have to respect an embargo of movement during morning and evening rush hours, depending on the size/weight of the load he would have been under escort, he also would have been running to a pre-determined movement order that lists all the roads he is to navigate and is agreed in advance by all the police forces that the vehicle would pass through. It would be interesting to know why the vehicle travelled outside of these boundaries.

Sounds like getting to work was nothing more than a pipe dream!

Most of our local main roads/junctions are getting close to capacity during peak hours even without unforeseen problems.
Get used to being late to work or late home every day - or learn to commute without a car ;)
