Swanage seafront set for revamp

PLANNING chiefs are set to revamp Swanage seafront and the town’s Shore Road Gardens.

A series of consultation events have been planned to give residents an opportunity to have a say on how the scheme proceeds.

Both areas are vital features in Swanage but Purbeck council officials believe they are suffering stability issues and are tired and under-used in places.

Cllr Gary Suttle said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to take Swanage forward and bring about improvements that will attract more visitors and benefit the community.

“Please take part in the consultation to ensure that the views of Swanage residents are well represented when the time comes for decisions to be made.”

The scheme is in the early stages of consultation, which runs until the end of September. Decisions on the way forward are likely to be made later this year.

The consultation is being run by the district council, Swanage Town Council and the Swanage Town and Community Partnership.

A district council spokesman said: “We want to hear people’s aspirations for the area. We also want to know what changes are needed and how the area can be improved for the community and future generations to enjoy.”

District council built environment spokesman Martyn Colvey said: “The ideas and visions of the local community are crucial to making this a place that all can enjoy, so we welcome comments.

“The consultation has been prepared to ensure that a unified vision is developed with realistic goals that can make a real difference.”

• Consultation event dates: Swanage Mowlem Theatre, July 8, 5-8pm, alongside the current planning consultation Where Shall We Build; Sandpit Field, August 2, 1-5pm; Town Partnership Room, Swanage Town Hall, Sept 6, 3-7pm.

People of Swanage be prepared to be consulted then totally ignored! Hopefully you won't have demolition sites being turned into temporary car parks for 30 odd years as per Bournemouth. As a regular visitor to Swanage I would like to see the town rid of that sixties style building and amusement arcade that spoil the centre of town and the waterfront.

So what are we to expect on our sea front? Penthouse mabe 12 newbuilds for the Adult Playboys of Bournemouth Council at £1,000,000 a pop at public taxpayers expence?? Why do we need to turn our little town into a mini Bournemouth. Next their will be having idears for a Swanage Night Club. We dont want overpopulation and have the social night problems as Bournemouth. I moved hear from Bournemouth becouse i wanted piece of mind, so mabe i should of consiter LULWORTH area now if things change too much!

People of Swanage, resist this if you can, this happened in Bournemouth over the years and these faceless councillors ripped the heart out of it.
The character of Bournemouth has been lost forever and now favors only the rich with their seafront apartments, the imax, another disaster.
Swanage is one of the last places in this area where you can park a car and walk to the seafront within minutes, no highrise flats for rich people, no ugly modern so called buildings, Swanage is just a quaint little town and thats the way it should be left, or suffer the fate of Bournemouth

Purbeck District Council is the biggest waste of public money there is. Swanage doesn't need to attract more visitors. In the Summer Swanage is packed to the limit. What we do need is an extension to the season. That means providing activities within Purbeck. That means supporting the Museums who have small budgets and are almost totally volunteer run. They all need storage space. The Swanage Railway needs somewhere to store vintage rolling stock under cover - like large sheds at Furzebrook. We need more outdoor activity centres. Leave the sea front alone. Leave it just as we love it. Purbeck District Council must be outsiders looking to make a name for themselves and keep their careers in government. Time has come to reduce local government done to the minmum. We are fed up with paying excessive rates and getting stupid ideas like unwanted Business Park, and several hundred more second homes.

If you want people to come to Swanage then encourage them by giving them free/cheap mini-train rides around the town. I can't believe that some people like the seafront as it is...stop the traffic from driving along the beach front and turn it into a promenade with plenty of seating lighting, proper landscaped area's, CCTV that works 24/7, daytime and evening entertainment and a wider beach. It'd be nice to bring the whole place up to modern standards. Of course the town will look different, people in Dorset have always found it difficult to move with the times anyway but at least it won't look like a museum piece with just Thomas the Tank to look at, I also wish the local council would spread the wealth a bit more....
