Bournemouth Imax consultation: most favour tropical gardens

THE people have spoken – and the most popular choice to replace the much-hated IMAX building on Bournemouth’s seafront is tropical gardens.

More than 3,500 people took part in public consultation over seven possible options for the prestigious site near Bournemouth Pier. Supporters of the tropical gardens thought they would blend in well with the surroundings, providing a relaxing attraction without interfering with the sea views.

The second-favourite option was an all-weather water park, although opponents expressed concern over the potential height of the building and water slides and its possible “tacky” appearance.

In third place was an interactive arts, museum and entertainment development; and fourth came a performing arts space or amphitheatre. Least popular as stand-alone attractions were boutiques and bistros, a spa, and family play park.

Council leader Stephen MacLoughlin said: “I am particularly pleased that, of those who took part, 96 per cent supported at least one of the options, which gives me confidence that we got this initial list right.

“The results show that a mixture of attractions is most likely to appeal to a broad range of people, with water park and performing arts, water park and tropical gardens, and water park and interactive arts facility the most popular combinations.”

Three-quarters of the responses came from Bournemouth residents, and 2,000 took the trouble to add extra comments. Many of those were in support of improving sea views and making sure any replacement building is attractive.

Cllr MacLoughlin said he wanted a building of which the town could be proud. “We know how much people value the view, and have pledged that whatever building we have on that site, the architecture will be sympathetic to its setting.”

The results of the consultation will be discussed by Cabinet on April 28, when members will decide which option or options merit a feasibility study.

The study, which will look at how likely the chosen scheme is to attract private investment, will go to Cabinet on June 26 for a final decision on the future of the site.

The list was made by somebody living in the 1970's. I think a lot of people thought they didn't have any choice to ask for anything else.

In other words the council have spent £4 million on a useless heap of sand at one pier and £10 million on a useless hole in the sand at the other.

I am intrigued that the Water Park came out top as the Echo readers popular choice, but then another vote brings the Tropical Gardens to the front. No wonder we do not have any faith in our administration.

I'm with roysses...the link he has highlighted is exactly the type of attraction this town needs. Something that can appeal to all ages and is educational, fun and likely to keep high visitor numbers. A tropical gardens is a nice idea but if I was on holiday, tropical gardens wouldn't be high on my list of attractions to visit, especially if I had kids...they'd be bored stiff!
I've said it before, the council should look to an attraction called Disney quest in America, that sort of attraction would be ideal for this location.

We shouldn't hold our breath... by the time the plans have gone through all the committee's it'll be time for the local council elections. The Tories will be kicked out LibDems will get in, they won't like the Tory Imax plans and we'll end up with another car park just like the Winter Gardens.

Still think the best idea was for the aquarium to take it on.

So let me get this right. You hated the great big glass building cos it was unsightly. But you want to replace it with a tropical garden that I assume will be in a great big glass building. So infact it wasnt the building that you didnt like, it was the facilities that were not to your taste. If you are going to moan atleast get your subject matter right. Most people around here dont care about the imax building. key word is MOST FAIL. how true.

The three most popular mixture of attractions, as quoted by Councillor MacLoughlin, all include a waterpark. This site is not large enough to accomodate a decent waterpark let alone one shared with another attraction!

Tropical Gardens???!!!!!?????
? Was this the plan all along??? Make out like we have a choice - then bam. Have that. Another FAIL. I voted for shops & restaurants, something that the front desperately needs. I would have used them, and regularly. Tourists would use them and stay at the front longer & spend more money. People want more choice than pikey, dirty Harry Ramsdens.

A tropical garden, pftt. "Lets go down to the sea today kids. Then if you're good I'll treat you to a sweat out in a huge greenhouse, looking at plants....I bet you can't wait"

I really couldn't think of a more crappy idea

I think tropical gardens are not a bad idea. It would reflect the Victorian history of Bournemouth.
@Aviewoneverything. Not everyone has kids, besides you are next to 7 miles of sand and outdoors! A Disney play palace is a terrible idea - brain washing kids with more commercial American rubbish.
@ Kamanchi Sly, I agree more restaurants would be nice, but there are enough shops in the centre of town.

Cafes within (tropical) garden terraces with views of the sea. That has always been my suggestion.
