A MOTHER facing eviction from her home following a screwdriver attack on her son has given her “heartfelt thanks” to a Boscombe man who has given £500 to help clear her rent arrears.

Sue Vincent said she had been left “gobsmacked” by the act of generosity from the 43-year-old local man, who has asked the Daily Echo not to reveal his identity.

And on Monday (Apr 12) there was another boost for the family as the housing trust announced a two-month hold on eviction proceedings following the intervention of MP John Bercow.

Sue’s son, Nick Verron, 25, has been left needing round-the-clock care after a screwdriver was driven into his skull by Jason Teelin, 18, in an unprovoked attack in Roumelia Lane last July.

“I’m gobsmacked. Out of this one dreadful act, we have had so much kindness. Please, please pass on my heartfelt thanks.

“You just can’t put a price on that level of kindness,” said Sue.

The donor made his offer in a post on the Daily Echo’s website and after contact from our reporter, visited the office on Monday with a cash payment.

Injuries suffered in the attack have forced high-flyer Nick, a grammar school-educated IT salesman, to move back to his mother’s housing association property in Aylesbury.

Both Sue and her partner Kevin lost their jobs last autumn after extended absence to visit Nick in hospital and attend his attacker’s court appearances.

They have sold their possessions to fund the cost of travelling from Aylesbury to Bournemouth, and to meet Nick’s care costs.

Sue’s claim for Employment and Support Allowance was turned down after she was judged fit to work, leaving her family to survive on a single weekly benefit payment of £64.30.

She is appealing the decision and believes a backdated award from the Department of Work and Pensions would help to clear the £4,200 arrears demanded by the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust by April 20.

District councillor, Phil Yerby, the chairman of the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust, pledged to personally investigate the housing association’s handling of the matter.

A spokesperson for VAHT denied that its decision to apply for an adjournment at a possession hearing on Tuesday April 20 had resulted from "external pressure".
