‘I’m a scapegoat’ says objecting Christchurch MP Chris Chope

CHRISTCHURCH MP Chris Chope believes he has been made a scapegoat over the controversy surrounding a bill that would have protected Third World countries from “vulture fund” operators.

Last week Mr Chope was named in a national newspaper as the Tory MP who shouted “object”, preventing the important anti-poverty bill from progressing any further in the House of Commons.

The Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Bill was designed to stop operators buying up the debt of third world nations, then suing for immediate repayment.

But despite defending the reasons behind the controversial move, which has met with protests by outraged anti-poverty charities, Mr Chope was unable to confirm or deny whether he was the unknown voice.

He said: “Well really I can’t answer that question.

“The objection was to do with the bill not being given enough time to be heard and debated properly.

“There are concerns surrounding the details of this bill and these need to be debated properly.

“If the government want this bill then there is nothing to stop them giving more time to it and I would welcome that. The objection is not to the bill in principle.

“Any concerns that we do have could be addressed if we are given more time.

“I’ve got broad shoulders so I can cope with the criticism, but I do feel I have been made a scapegoat in this.”

Mr Chope also confirmed that he had not faced any backlash from the Conservative head office over the incident.

A Facebook group set up by a London woman, Ammie El-Atar Whaley, protesting over the defeated bill has attracted nearly 1,200 members in three days.

If he does not know whether he said the word object or not then how on earth does he expect to be elected to represent the people of Christchurch again ?......... He is obviously either suffering from the early stages of Alzheimers or is a complete retard..............
... Or a liar. Which one is it Mr Chope ?

Seems like Chopper Chope has made a parliamentary career out of stopping other people achieving anything. Does he do anything positive at all?

How disgusting that this foolish idiot can prevent a little relief for those suffering from poverty by childlishly shouting 'object' and then hiding!

What a pathetic little man!

If there was any justice this man should never be let anywhere near parliament again. Chopper Chope should be for the Chop!

Seems chope fits the bill as a typical politician, never answers the question directly, and feathering his own nest with our money, and many think things will change no matter what party gets voted in at the general election, can we request a box on the slip that has None of the above.

Some say we might have a hung parliament, hmm what a nice thought...,anyway back to the story at hand,mr chope always does this,he needs to get his nose out of the trough and see that this bill will help poorer countries, something he knows nothing about, being poor that is,he like many others live in their own ivory tower surrounded by expensive luxury with no clue what really goes on at ground level

That man is a grade 1 ****. Hopefully the people of Christchurch will follow the sensible example of the voters in Southampton Itchen in 1992 and boot Chope out of the Commons once again. Please? (key words below: 'used-next'!)

@GB916 There will not be a hung parliament, the BBC are desperate for this to happen and are clinging to the idea like a survivor of a ship wreck clings to floating wreckage, it is probably the only way that they will survive in their current format. Why is there no mention in the Echo of Sir John Butterfill and the allegations made by the Sunday Times and Channel Four ?

Well said one and all.

Trouble is the Echo will probably pull them as they have done on every other occasion there have been, fully justified, criticism of Chump.

Go on Ed, prove me wrong!

This would be the same Chris Chope who declined to show any effective interest in the immediate and realistic problems of my autistic grandson, during a meeting with his mother on Friday, at his surgery. Apparently, she felt as if she was an inconvenience and he did not even look at her prepared details ( two sides of A4 ). Truly worthy of shame. Still he is no doubt financially comfortable and has little reason to concern himself should he not do his job effectively. Living in a different world ?

Lets be fair dress a pengiun in a blue suit and it will win in Christchurch.
The problem lies with the dullard voters who elected him.
Thank god I moved away from the place.

And we all thought Robert Adley was useless.
On the day of his memorial ceremony at The Priory I asked his chauffer (in the Castle Tavern) how he managed to find his way to Christchurch, because Adley only ever appeared in town when there was an election.
The only time you see Chump in Xchurch is when he is eating out with his wife.
The man hasn’t even got an email address.
Be careful Mr Chope, the days of Christchurch voters voting for a dog turd with a blue rosette are fast disappearing.
Sorry to whomever the Labour candidate is but the only way to vote now is what we did in 1993.
And, no Ed, I didn’t suggest voting Lib Dem.
Did I???

Why cannot he say whether he was the one who objected?
Also, does he make money from business from vulture funds?

In view of my previous comments, well done to the Echo moderator for letting democratic opinion remain.

May it continue.

He stooped to a new low when a group of his burly henchmen pushed me out of the Christchurch Conservative club for asking him to give a straight answer on film. Hey politely ask me to leave first before shoving me about.
