New loyalty card for shoppers in Christchurch

A Christchurch woman is hoping to boost trade in the town through a new loyalty card scheme for shoppers.

Cheryl Dennett is launching the Christchurch Eye Privilege Club to promote the benefits of shopping locally.

Those who purchase an annual membership will receive a card which will give them access to deals and discounts at local shops and services.

Mrs Dennett, who edits a magazine, will launch the scheme at a “Keep it in Christchurch” event at Highcliffe Castle tomorrow.

She said: “I have spoken to many traders in the area, who have made me aware of the need for such a scheme here in Christchurch.

“The idea is to give Christchurch customers a reason for shopping in Christchurch through discounts and offers from participating traders and businesses.

“Like everyone locally, I’m very keen to see Christchurch prosper and hope that this idea will provide an exciting incentive to shop in the town.”

Traders will set their own offers and customers will be able to purchase a card for £5 from Christchurch Information Centre or Ye Olde George Inn in Castle Street.

Terry Atkinson, secretary of Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: “This is an interesting opportunity for retailers to focus on consolidating their base of loyal customers and for the local community to demonstrate their support for the High Street and its independent traders.

“We wish all involved every success with the project.”

Rob Martin from Ye Olde George Inn added: “These are tough times for both shoppers and retailers and for us to continue to thrive we need to offer value for money.

“Local businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and society and they can only gain by working together.”

Given the prices in Ye Olde George Inn I hope that the discount card applies there. At least Dick Turpin had the common decency to wear a mask.

This is a great idea but will depend on sensible offers being put forward by the traders. There was a similar scheme across Bournemouth not so long ago called Saturn Card. They had hundreds of traders signed up and even advertised on local radio but the discounts and offers were so poor it never took off!

First line of paragraph eight, Ben:
"Traders will set their own offers"

More to the point, though, whenever I see these "25% off" signs in big letters, the slogan features "Up to" in smaller letters, and a host of caveats relating to elements that are not participating at all.

As an example, I give you the one-day offer of a certain well-established Bournemouth department store only a fortnight or so ago.

the 25% was purely an example . I am just refering to advertising in general .. you do your research first and have everything to go then publicise all of the discounts .. surely that is basic to get customers in

Will we get discounts on parking? That's why I don't go into Christchurch.

Dunno. Irrespective of the 25% example, it seems that you publicise your biggest discount and then use the very small print to explain to potential customers why so few of the products on offer actually feature that level of discount.
