Positive response to Imax survey

MORE than 1,000 people have already completed the survey on what should replace Bournemouth’s Imax building.

The short questionnaire has been available on the council’s website since March 1 and you have until March 25 to have your say.

“To receive over 1,000 responses in seven days shows people have a real interest in this site,” said council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin.

“It proves people are just as united in support for the positive development of their seafront as they are in their desire to see the current building gone.”

The seven short-listed ideas are: a water park; an interactive arts activity centre and museum; tropical gardens; a spa; a performing arts space and amphitheatre; a family play park; boutiques and bistros.

People can also download a form from the council’s website and post it in.

Bournemouth council bought the complex for £5 million in January.

Another £2.5m has been set aside either pay off the leaseholders inside or fund a compulsory purchase order. The council's cabinet will meet on April 29 to consider the survey results and any financial or technical constraints.

It will then decide which options to recommend for further in depth studies before a final decision is made on June 23. The Imax will also be up for discussion at three coming Area Forum meetings.

They are:

•Springbourne – Wednesday, March 17, 7pm at Bourne Spring Trust, St Mary’s Road.

•West Cliff – Tuesday, March 23, 7pm at St Michael’s School.

Southbourne – Thursday, March 25, 7pm at Emmanuel Church, Southbourne Road.

"A further £2.5M has been set aside to aquire the leases"
Thats strange because the report to Council states that after the purchase of £5.34M another £3.16M will be needed from Prudential borrowing which has to be repaid from income generated by that investment so no cost falls on the Council Tax payer
So not only is the total cost, just to get an empty building that nobody knows whats its going to be used for,
£8.5M not £7.5M the extra money is going to be borrowed not from Council coffers
To generate the repayment will be a clever trick unless the site is used as a car park
Finally whilst Cllr Macloughlin continues to spin a line as to the consultation perhaps it should be remembered that the report also says that it is likely that the building will be transfered to the new asset holding company where the developer will hold sway

I doubt that anything that people say (even though i did the form) will make any difference to what is done with it. The council will come up with some idea to make us 'special' (like the surf reef) and it will fail badly. They will not care what local people want as they are only interested in getting holiday makers here (or maybe just stag parties).

Will the results be made public, or will the council just make up their own mind?

Lets be upbeat- the council HAVE bought the site back- it IS getting demolished and the town can move on and be rewarded with something fantastic. I think the council ARE listening and doing what they can for the good of the town.
.
We, the public wanted consultation- and we've got it. Now is not the time to moan. Now is the time to say what you have to say about its future.

DEMOLISHED !! - there is no firm plan to do that. where did you get that from ? it was just another idea that was being kicked around, dont bank on it happening as the cheapest route is to accommodate another facility within the existing shell - the council are not listening to anyone dont be sucked into the hype ,it will be another balls up

One positive that has at last surfaced as a result of the Imax Debacle people
are not happy with the current Council
and clearly indicating Clr McLoughlin should no longer be running
the current regime

The problem is seasider, this Council have a habit of listening to the public, then ignoring what they say. The so called "leader" is the worst one for doing this. Like Caz-Caz said, don't be sucked in by the lies that are being sprouted. This is just an exercise in getting re-elected. Afterall, nowhere do the Council say they will do what most people want. They are trying to show how nice they are by listening to people. B*****Ks they are lying through their teeth again. They have no intention of doing what the Bounemouth public want. That's the problem with lying all the time Mr Councillor, if you try telling the truth (and no, your tongue won't go black if you did that) nobody believes you. The bulk of Bournmouth voters have no faith in you Councillors, so if you really do care about this town, you won't stand at the next election. But that won't happen will it? You have such a high opinion of yourselves, you really do believe this town can't survive without you. Plus the fact you like having your noses in the trough. Hate to tell you this, but Bournemouth survived before you lot of money grabbing muggers turned up, it will survive once you are all gone. Do the decent thing and leave. And a note for those that do bother to vote. DON'T just vote for the party of your choice. Find things out about those that want to spend money on your behalf. Just because you class yourself a Tory/Labour/Libdem doesn't mean their candidate will serve YOU best. Listen to what the other parties have to say, read their paperwork, ask them questions, then vote for the person you think is best for your area. To many people blindly vote for the party they have always voted for, but we have all seen what happens when you do that. Vote the person, not the party. Better still, vote for Independants if you can, they don't have to kiss their "leaders" butt.
