Backing women in business

Dorset businesswomen are set to be recognised for their achievements.

The Daily Echo is backing the Langtry Manor Business Women’s Awards, which have been created by Tara Howard, joint owner of the Bournemouth hotel.

Ten categories will acknowledge the valuable contribution that Dorset’s businesswomen make to the local economy.

The idea for the awards came when Tara entered the Entrepreneur of the Year category of the Dorset Business Awards and was unsuccessful. “I felt women should be recognised for their hard work in a business world dominated by men,” she said, adding that she puts an equal amount of effort into her work as she does at home and in bringing up her children.

“In general, men do not experience the same pressures,” she said.

“There are the old stereotypes that women have to deal with. Women often have to work harder in order to succeed in a man’s world and I feel we need to be recognised for our efforts.

“It’s good public relations for the winning business and an exciting chance to be part of an exclusive night out,” she said, adding that winners will receive a special award for their category.

“We have been bombarded by nominations,” she concluded.

Deadline for applications is Thursday April 1 and the awards ceremony and gala dinner at Langtry Manor will take place at 6.45pm on Thursday May 13, attended by the mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Beryl Baxter.

Attendance at the events is by invitation only.

Entries can be submitted by printing off and completing an entry form at langtrymanor.com.

I take it that they are in line to win the "Germain Greer award".
Isn't this just a bit sexxist?
(You will note the double x).
I take it that anyone who shaves their armpits is automatically excluded.
It is about time that people were recognised for what they do, not how they use a toilet!

Why women? We are 30 years into the feminism thing yet still handing out awards, gongs etc on the basis of gender. Why not on the basis of class, or wooden leggedness, or squint or whatever? Women don't have to work harder to succeed in a so-called man's world. Men have long been relegated to the unnecessary pile yet still vocal feminists play the victim card. Shame on the Echo for being drawn into the nonsense.
