Poole secures crucial funding for Twin Sails bridge

POOLE'S Twin Sails bridge has finally secured vital government funding.

After a nervewracking delay, the Department of Transport handed the town the news it had been waiting for - confirmation of the £14.1 million grant for the scheme.

It means all the funding for the £37 million project is now in place.

Work is expected to start in early summer and take around 20 months.

Personally I think a fly-over would have been preferable to this monstrosity.

Now people driving to Poole from Hamworthy will have to wait for TWO bridges to close in order to get to the other side.

What a load of b*****ks!

I'm sorry, you will only drive over one bridge, the one that is open which you will be directed to, you would only drive over the other bridge if you drove round in circles. A higher fixed bridge might have been the better option, I think Poole council thought so, before the public enquiry rejected the idea, but now it is going to be a second lifting bridge so we will all have to live with it.

From nowhere, to nowhere, saving a 15 minute (max) drive around Holes Bay.

This Government is just trying to ruin the country before they get sent back to Scotland, which is the only part of Britain which votes for or benefits from a Labour government.

Maybe they'll give me £5 million for a new gnome in my garden - it will be as much use as this bridge.

Yes we will only drive over one bridge - but whilst each bridge is raised to allow the marine traffic through, the main road into Poole will STILL be gridlocked as it is now when the current bridge is open.

With 2000 new homes in the area, this is potentially up to a further 2000 cars on the same stretch of road into Poole.

This bridge has been voted in for it's "looks" rather than any practical features and it is we, the residents of Hamworthy who will continue to suffer having to wait to get out of our own driveways when the Blandford Road is gridlocked when the bridge/s are open.

When approaching the bridge by road and the signs say it is open, is it open or closed? Does it mean it is open to traffic or open to boats? Never could work that out.

13 years ago, the conservative party agreed that we would have a bridge over holes bay. the labour bunch arrived and stopped it. will they now try to take credit for the second rate alternative? this lifting bridge is just a newer version of the old one. the old one which will be closed down as soon as possible because its too old and expensive to maintain. so we will be back to the continuous snarl ups throughout the town centre while we wait for our new lifting bridge to be raised.

I have a feeling that this bridge will suffer chronic mechanical issues. It is too complicated. If nothing else, in a strong gale will the upended 'sails' withstand the wind's force without damaging the bearings? Will the bridge have to be closed during gales?

Up and over makes more sense. The French had a pioneering, cost- effective design that has been used not only there, but all over America, with great success.
