Target reckless breeders, say Dorset dog lovers

PROPOSALS forcing dog owners to insure their pets are barking up the wrong tree.

That’s the claim of dog experts and owners after the government yesterday laid out plans for compulsory dog insurance.

Rather than tax many responsible owners, critics insist the focus of any new legislation should be unscrupulous breeders.

Dave Dowson watched as his fiancée’s Border Terrier was savaged to death by two boxer-type dogs in Poole earlier this year.

He believes insurance would have been little comfort in his situation.

“A few hundred pounds is not going to replace our dog,” said Mr Dowson.

“People breeding dangerous dogs underground aren’t the type of people who are going to worry about insurance.

“Then you’ve got working class families like me and my fiancée who can’t afford another bill to pay.”

More than 100 people are admitted to hospital after dog attacks each week.

It is the rise of ‘status’ dogs, often used for fighting by gangs, that is an escalating problem.

And it is the cross-breeding of dogs like pitbulls and Staffordshire Bull Terriers that needs to be stopped, said Sheila Meredith, from Ferndown dog rescue Waggy Tails.

“That is the crux of the problem,” she said.

“These dangerous dogs can be bred and sold by anyone.

“There is legislation about breeding but it is not being properly enforced.”

Mrs Meredith said in many countries dogs were routinely neutered at a young age.

She also feared a mass abandoning of pets by owners who could simply not afford to insure their pet.

“You are going to see lots of dogs simply turned out on to the streets,” she said.

“We are at the sharp end and already receive 10-15 calls a day from people who can’t look after their dog.”

Hang on! I thought the proposals was for dog insurance, not dog tax. Something completely different. Me thinks the Echo is trying to stir up the usual angry people with misreporting.

Anyway whats the fuss about microchipping. Horses in this country are microchipped already.

I expect the usual suspects will claim that its a Stealth Tax, Big Brother, civil liberties and all that blah blah blah. Anyway it all doesnt matter this government wont be around long enough to see the legislation through. Although i can imagine the Tories would consider bringing back the dog licence as they will want to be seen as being strong and effective on crime when they take over. So watch this space!

Dave Dowson commented “Then you’ve got working class families like me and my fiancée who can’t afford another bill to pay.” If you can't afford to pay the bills don't have the animal.
More to the point, lets have a proper dog licence that would allow for the employment of dog wardens and this would help alleviate all kinds of problems regards dogs off leads and unscrupulous breeders. Get some control over the situation and stop just meddling with it. Be constructive

More useless laws that punish the law abiding.

Dog bite insurance! surely the biggest winner is the insurace companys, ive owned 2 dogs over 23 years and neither ever attacked anyone, so that would of been 23 years of payments of £500ish a year for useless bite insurance..

The goverment should be talking about things like -

Razing the dog ownership age to 21 or even 25 if need be.

Bring back the "dog licence" (loose your licence loose your dog owning privalige)

microchipping your dog! that should of been law years ago anyway.

These simple things would solve more of the problems than "bite insurance" ever could.

Lastly how come a dog might need insurance but a cyclist does not? if im hit by a bicycle the outcome could also be life threatening and who would pay?

I would just like to say that we can afford to pay bills but why should honest people have to foot the bill for those people that would buy dogs and not insure them as there are plenty of people that would do this. For example just look at the amount of uninsured drivers on the road and we all ready pay for them on our insurance premiums so I can foresee that this would also happen with dog insurance, and 2-3 hundred pounds compensation (by the way which would effect everyone else's premiums) can not replace the lost dog as every dog is different and you can not replace the character of the lost dog . The dog licence a good practice in theory but how can you enforce a ban on people not owning dogs when we can not even enforce banned drivers from sitting behind a steering wheel and driving an uninsured car. So I believe there is no real solution to the dangerous dog problem as with any law there are people who are prepared to brake them and it would only force more owners to go underground for the buying and breeding of different types of dogs.

Whilst where on the subject of dogs, the governmenet should do something about dog "overbreeding". Where I live people seem to breed and breed there dogs for the money, not careing where the pups end up once there sold.
