A LITTLE girl in remission from cancer is hoping to meet her current favourite cartoon character when she visits Disneyland Paris with her family.

Olivia Caballero from St Ives says that at the moment Princess Ariel from Disney’s 1989 The Little Mermaid is her out-and-out favourite.

But her mum Lisa says that can change from week to week and it could be a character from Snow White in number one spot in a few days’ time.

Olivia, will soon celebrate her seventh birthday with the three-day all-expenses-paid trip to Paris for her, four-year-old sister Gabby, mum and dad Nick, thanks to the generosity of the Sophie Barringer Trust.

Her parents have known about the trip for about a year, but Olivia did not have an inkling she could be going on her once-in-a-lifetime journey until she was presented with the tickets at assembly at St Ives First School.

“It was a huge surprise to her,” said Mrs Caballero, a nurse at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. “If you could give her anything she wanted, this would be top of her list.”

Olivia proved herself to be a determined little fighter.

When she was just four months old she was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumour that eventually affected every bone in her body. Her chances of survival seemed negligible.

But she underwent six months of chemotherapy in the Piam Brown ward at Southampton General Hospital.

“A year after the chemo she went into remission and the tumour had regressed to nothing, so she’s done amazingly well,” said her mum.

But the tumour had wrapped itself around her spinal cord causing damage that meant she could not take her first faltering footsteps until the age of three.

She has recently undergone more surgery and is having to learn to walk once again.

Her parents will hope the Disneyland visit puts a spring back in her step.
