GARRY May has dismissed talk that Aaron Baseby is only in Buccaneers’ team simply because he’s Mark Baseby’s brother.

Mark was one of Bournemouth Castle Cover’s leading performers as they swept to a National League and cup double last year.

Aaron gave solid support from a reserve berth, although his form was up and down at times.

Both siblings have been handed a Wimborne Road recall this year.

But May was quick to quash speculation the Baseby boys would always come as a package, particularly as they had lined up together for Sittingbourne from 2005 to 2008.

The Buccaneers boss said: “I think Aaron really improved last season and that’s why he’s back with us on his own merit.

“I saw him at Sittingbourne in 2008 and you could see he really improved in 2009.

“The last two months of the season were really great for him.

“He had a little blip in mid-season, but put it right.

“So I think he can do a job for us at number two because with Jay Herne at one, he can help Aaron.

“People will say ‘you have his brother Mark in our side, so you have to have Aaron’, but that’s not the case.

“Aaron is a great team man and fully deserves his place.”

May, who is looking ahead to the National League annual meeting which begins today, added: “I’d really like Aaron to stay in the one-to-five proper.

“This year he has to concentrate on making the step up from reserve and then stay in the top five.”

John Resch and Daniel Halsey, who attends a fund-raising horse racing event organised by the Riders’ Equipment Fund at Poole Stadium tonight (7.30pm), are Buccaneers’ other two confirmed starters.

National League chiefs meet today and tomorrow to formulate plans for the 2010 campaign with Dudley’s application to join expected to be rubberstamped.

Mark Baseby will attend tonight’s horse racing event, with admission at the door £5 to REF members and £6 to non-members.
