Poole Town begin their latest quest to find a new permanent home next week.

After their dreams of building a new ground on Branksome Rec were dashed before Christmas, the first official discussions are to take place about using Canford Park Arena.

The club will sound out Poole council’s head of planning, Stephen Thorne, about green belt issues, with Canford Park boss Bill Riddell also present.

After planning issues led to the sudden collapse of the Branksome scheme, the non-league club is determined not to allow the same to happen to their Canford hopes.

Chris Reeves, Poole Town vice-chairman, said: “We are anxious to find an answer.

“Bearing in mind what has happened in the past we want to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to pull this scheme off.

“If we get an amber light then we will start attacking the plans with gusto. A facility at Canford Park could be extremely exciting for us.”

Poole and Bournemouth councils jointly own the freehold of the land at Canford Magna and lease the sports facilities at the arena to Canford Park Sports Ltd.

Poole Town first floated the idea of using the arena several years ago but a planning application could not be agreed for building on the site.

Mr Reeves said subsequent development in the area, such as the Hamworthy Club on Magna Road, gave them grounds for optimism this time around.

He added that the FA remained “very supportive” of the club’s attempts to find a new home and that funding would be likely to be forthcoming.

Poole Town has also been awarded the FA’s highest community kitemark – the Charter Standard Community Club honour.
